Job Summary
Under general direction, operates equipment at Landfill to recycle brush, discarded appliances
and yard waste. Maintains litter control at the landfill. Monitors groundwater, leachate and air
emissions. Recycles household hazardous waste, electronic waste, tires, oil and antifreeze.
Performs composting and drop-site recycling. Pushes, compacts and covers solid waste.
Performs general service and maintenance of landfill grounds, equipment and buildings.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Performs groundwater sampling and monitoring, storm water samples, leachate level
monitoring, surface air emissions and landfill gas collection system monitoring; manages
methane gas, troubleshoots and repairs any problems; prepares required reports.
• Operates compost processing equipment, chipping and grinding machinery to recycle
brush and yard waste and to prepare compost.
• Samples and analyzes compost; loads compost and wood mulch in customer vehicles.
• Receives, collects, packages and reports household hazardous waste and electronic
waste.
• Contacts vendors for shipping of all hazardous waste including electronics.
• Operates scale, as needed.
• Collects recycling on a predetermined route using a hook lift truck, dumps roll-offs.
• Mows, removes snow and performs general maintenance to grounds and buildings.
• Performs routine inspection and general scheduled maintenance to Landfill equipment
(fluids, greasing equipment, hoses and filters) and flare.
• Picks up supplies and parts for daily landfill operations.
• Drives dump truck to haul rock, compost and brush.
• Removes oil and antifreeze from drop site and dumps into barrel for pick-up.
• Regularly assists customers unloading; answers questions regarding Landfill services.
• Stocks shelves of exchange room with recycled products.
• Serves as backup to Landfill Operator – Heavy Equipment as needed.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in
heavy equipment operation.
• Landfill Operator Certification required within one year of hire. Hazardous Waste
Operator Certification within one year of hire. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of
Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State
of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months
of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug
screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• Forklift certification. Compost certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to interface positively with customers, clients and service technicians.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to prepare written work orders and job records.
• Ability to read and comprehend maintenance and parts manuals and forms, safety rules,
operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Knowledge of basic mechanics and safety procedures.
• Knowledge of composting procedures, hazardous waste handling procedures and
regulations.
• Knowledge of federal, state and local regulations for landfill operations.
• Knowledge of landfill rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of safety procedures.
• Skill in operating and maintaining trucks, equipment and machinery used in landfill
operations.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving

is frequently exposed to outside weather condition, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen,
insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
more than moderate exposure to dangerous situations. Involves more than moderate exposure
to stress due to the work environment and/or crisis situations.
