Job Summary
Under general direction, performs basic service, maintenance and repairs of vehicles and
equipment in the City municipal fleet.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Inspects City municipal fleet and equipment for safety defects and road worthiness.
• Inspects mechanical functions including the driveline, suspension, steering, brakes,
lights, tires, hoses and exhaust systems.
• Diagnoses and repairs mechanical problems, electrical components, hydraulic systems,
braking systems (both air and hydraulic), suspension systems and cooling system
components.
• Uses equipment such as boom truck and overhead crane to perform activities such as
rigging, removal of old material and installation of new parts.
• Repairs and adjusts engines (both gas and diesel), transmissions, differentials, clutches
and hydraulic systems.
• Raises vehicles using hydraulic jack or hoists in a safe manner to remove or replace units
such as engines, transmissions, differentials or as necessary.
• Tunes up engines, replaces and fits parts including carburetors, fuel injection systems,
fuel pumps, strainers, fuel lines, fuel tanks and gauges.
• Replaces electrical components such as alternators, distributors, control modules, relays,
lights and switches.
• Replaces brake system components such as master cylinders, boosters, brake linings,
drums and rotors.
• Replaces, fits and adjusts cooling system components such as radiators, water pumps
and hoses.
• Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on a wide variety of the City's light and
heavy equipment fleet.
• May answer service calls and perform repair work in the field.
• Furnishes personal hand tools for use in performing job duties.

• Prepares new vehicles and equipment for service, shuttles vehicles, and removes older
ones from the fleet for disposal.
• Responds on-call to emergencies during winter months.
• Cleans work area and shop; offices, equipment, cleans and maintains interior and
exterior of City pool vehicles.
• Reports time and material costs on computerized work order system.
• Posts applicable parts to work order and keeps detailed work order notes and status up
to date.
• Works with other City divisions to provide professional and courteous internal customer
service.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in
Automotive/Diesel Mechanics. Experience in auto/diesel mechanics, fleet maintenance,
or related.
• Forklift certification required within 60 days of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver’s license
with a satisfactory driving record. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa
commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of
Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of
hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen.
Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
written or oral instructions.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to diagnose and repair air brake system components.
• Ability to diagnose engine malfunctions and perform necessary repairs.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurement of equipment
tolerances.
• Ability to prepare written and computer-generated repair orders.

• Ability to read and interpret service manuals, electrical and hydraulic diagrams and
technical information, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and
procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Ability to write work reports.
• Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical
systems, computerized engine control and fuel systems.
• Knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations.
• Knowledge of the operation of a wide variety of equipment used in a municipal fleet.
• Skill in computer usage and typing skills.
• Skill in use of tools and repair equipment including engine, electrical and digital
diagnostic equipment, and precision measuring equipment.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving
mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock,

weather condition, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insect stings, and animals. The noise
level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves more than moderate exposure to
dangerous situations. Involves more than moderate exposure to stress due to the work
environment and/or crisis situations.
