HomeMy WebLinkAboutMechanic III - Equipment - DaysUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Mechanic III – Equipment (Days) Department: Public Works Division: Equipment Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Equipment FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 13 Job Number: 1303 Job Summary Under general direction, performs advanced service, maintenance, and repairs of vehicles and equipment in the City municipal fleet. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Serves as lead technician on the day shift. • Schedules, delegates and monitors the work of assigned mechanics. • Inspects City municipal fleet and equipment for safety defects and road worthiness. • Inspects mechanical functions including the driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, lights, tires, hoses and exhaust systems. • Diagnoses mechanical problems, electrical components, hydraulic systems, HVAC systems and cooling components and determines the extent of necessary repairs. • Repairs, adjusts and rebuilds engines (both gasoline and diesel), transmissions, differentials and clutches, air conditioning units and hydraulic systems. • Raises vehicle using hydraulic jack or hoists to remove or replace units such as an engine, transmission or differential. • Tunes up engines; replaces, fits and adjusts components and replaces parts including carburetors, fuel injection, fuel pumps, pistons, fuel lines, gasoline tanks and bearings. • Uses specialized equipment to diagnose electrical systems and computerized engine controls. • Repairs and replaces such components as alternators, distributors, relays, lights and switches. • Wires, diagnoses and reconditions electrical systems and computerized engine controls. • Replaces brake linings, drums, rotors, master cylinders and boosters. • Replaces, fits and adjusts radiators, water pumps and hoses. • Uses equipment such as boom truck and overhead crane to perform activities such as rigging, removal of old material and installation of new parts. • Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on a wide variety of the City’s light and heavy fleet. • Answers service calls and performs repair work in the field. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Works with other City divisions to provide customer service. • Generates and enters technician work orders on a computerized fleet maintenance system and runs reports. • Cleans work area and shop; offices, equipment, cleans and maintains interior and exterior of City pool vehicles. • Prepares new vehicles and equipment for service, shuttles vehicles, and removes older ones from the fleet for disposal. • Reports time and material costs on computer generated work orders. • Posts applicable parts to work order and keeps work order notes and status up to date. • Performs welding, fabrication, and component rebuilding and reconditioning services in hydraulics, pumps and other units on a wide range of equipment. • Designs safe equipment for fabrication. • Troubleshoots equipment and as necessary, redesigns and rebuilds equipment. • Responds on-call to emergencies during winter months. • Orders and stocks steel and welding supplies. • Furnishes personal hand tools for use in performing job duties. • Maintains facility in a safe and secure manner. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Automotive/Diesel Mechanics. Experience in auto/diesel mechanics, fleet maintenance, or related. • Air conditioning refrigerant handling certification. Forklift certification. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Ability to diagnose and repair air brake system components. • Ability to diagnose engine malfunctions and perform necessary repairs. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurement of equipment tolerances. • Ability to prepare written and computer-generated repair orders. • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, diagrams and technical information. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Ability to write work reports. • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, computerized engine control and fuel systems. • Knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations. • Knowledge of the operation of a wide variety of equipment used in a municipal fleet. • Skill in computer use and typing skills. • Skill in use of tools and repair equipment including engine, electrical and digital diagnostic equipment and precision measuring equipment. Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
