HomeMy WebLinkAboutMedia Production AssistantUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Media Production Assistant Department: City Manager’s Office Division: Communications Supervisor: Media Production Services Coordinator FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 8 Job Number: 0810 Job Summary Under general direction, produces, shoots, and edits videos for City and community organizations and performs other media functions and general duties in support of the Media Production Services Coordinator. Operates a variety of specialized electronic equipment. Creates long format video programming, including meetings, lectures, community forums, concerts and more. Creates short format video content for the City’s website, social media, and cable TV channel – City Channel 4. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Collaborates with City departments, divisions, boards, commissions, and community organizations to produce and distribute video programming to meet community information needs. • Operates a variety of video production equipment and performs media production, including videography, photography, audio recording, directing multi-camera live productions, lighting, production planning, set design, script writing, consultation and setup and teardown of equipment. • Edits or oversees the editing of video programs and other multi-media productions. • Supports the production activities of other Communications staff. • Provides non-production media support for City departments, boards, commissions, and other community organizations, including public address setup, audiovisual equipment loan or use, equipment purchase recommendations, and equipment repair and/or maintenance. • Troubleshoots electrical or mechanical equipment problems, performs general equipment maintenance, and facilitates needed repairs. • Performs facility management as assigned. • Purchases miscellaneous supplies and items related to the maintenance, repair, or replacement of minor equipment. • Manages the television studio, studio equipment use, maintenance, repair and construction of video program sets, and production vehicle use and maintenance. • Maintains production activity records, equipment inventory and maintenance records. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree and/or experience in Videography or related. • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to read and understand written technical materials in order to perform production activities. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Ability to write directions, routine reports and correspondence, and provide oral instructions. • Knowledge of basic videography, scripting, editing, audio, and lighting techniques. • Skill in making minor electrical and mechanical repairs. • Skill in operating a variety of specialized electronic and video equipment. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
