Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Athletic Fields
Department: Parks & Recreation

Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs work in the maintenance of athletic facilities and grounds
and performs other related work as required.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Repairs, installs, designs, and manages irrigation systems related to athletic facilities and
other City facilities.
• Manages turf in athletic fields, grounds and other City facilities.
• Operates equipment related to athletic facilities and grounds.
• Assists in scheduling of events and assigns staff duties based off events.
• Maintains and repairs electrical equipment, facility plumbing, and performs general
carpentry repairs.
• Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments.
• Assists in snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm
damage clean-up, and ice-skating area maintenance.
• Cleans all restrooms, shops, facilities, and areas within the Parks Department.
• Maintains digital log of maintenance.
• Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed.
• Performs duties in a safe manner and participates in safety training.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in repair and
management of athletic fields.
• Certified Pesticide Applicator within six months of hire. Satisfactory driving record. Valid
State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position.
Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements

within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-
employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background
check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Sports turf
management experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and take measurements.
• Ability to read and understand work orders, safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals and maintains written job records.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Knowledge of basic mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in a public building.
• Knowledge of custodial materials and equipment.
• Skill in the operation of various cleaning equipment including pool vacuums, floor
scrubbers and wet vacuums, transfer pumps, lawn mowers and snow blower.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
