HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWI - ForestryUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Forestry Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Parks & Forestry Supervisor: Superintendent of Parks & Forestry FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 4 Job Number: 0415 Job Summary Under immediate direction, performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance and care of the urban forest in parks, along trails, in natural areas and other public facilities and grounds within the City. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Answers questions and provides information to the public. • Assists with tree, shrub and perennial pruning, trimming, removing, chipping, planting, weeding and watering. • Operates chainsaws, hand saws, hand pruners, pole pruners, trucks, chippers, aerial lifts, backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment. • Assists in snow and ice removal for trails, pedestrian areas and parking lots, storm damage clean-up, and ice-skating area maintenance. • Performs minor mechanical repairs and small engine repairs. • Maintains tools and equipment. • Installs snow removal equipment on tractors and trucks. • Serves as crew leader on selected job assignments. • Assists other divisions, contractors and agencies as needed. • Responds to storm or other emergencies, as needed. • Performs duties in a safe manner and participates in safety training. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in tree maintenance, arboriculture and/or urban forestry. • Must obtain forklift and backhoe certification within 12 months of hire. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Pesticide applicator’s license. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and take measurements. • Ability to proficiently use computers, tablets and digital devices. • Ability to read and understand work orders, arboricultural best management practices and maintain written and digital job records. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Skill in the operation of chainsaws, hand saws, hand pruners, pole pruners, trucks, chippers, aerial lifts, backhoes, loaders and other specialized equipment. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
