Home My WebLink AboutMWI - LandfillUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Landﬁll Department: Public Works Division: Resource Management Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Landﬁll FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 3 Job Number: 0302 Job Summary Under general supervision, maintains litter control at the Landﬁll, assists with dumping refuse roll-oﬀs, mows grass, and performs routine janitorial work. Monitors drop-oﬀ recycling areas at Landﬁll and at community drop-oﬀ sites. Performs general service and maintenance of landﬁll grounds, equipment and buildings. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Picks up litter at Landﬁll. • Dumps roll-oﬀs, maintains area around trash and recycling bins. • Keeps recycling areas for oil, appliances and electronics cleaned up and organized. • Assists in keeping recycling bins at community drop-oﬀ sites clear of overﬂow, dumped items and litter. • Answers customer questions regarding Landﬁll services. • Directs traﬃc at Landﬁll. • Waters landﬁll roads with water truck to control dust. • Performs grounds maintenance by mowing, weeding, and mulching landscaped areas. • Operates snowplow and blowers to remove snow in winter months. • Picks up supplies and parts for daily Landﬁll operations. • Participates in safety committee and identiﬁcation of workplace hazards. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in general labor. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to interface positively with staﬀ and customers. • Ability to learn and understand landﬁll rules and regulations and composting procedures. • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. • Ability to prepare written work orders and job records. • Ability to read and comprehend maintenance and parts manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Knowledge of safety procedures. • Skill in operating and maintaining trucks, equipment and machinery used in ground maintenance operations.
