HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWI - Wastewater TreatmentUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Wastewater Treatment Department: Public Works Division: Wastewater Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Wastewater / Wastewater Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 4 Job Number: 0408 Job Summary Under immediate direction, performs work of routine difficulty in the cleaning and maintenance of grounds and buildings at the Wastewater treatment plant and facilities. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Cleans floors and carpets of wastewater treatment plant buildings, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, break rooms and locker rooms, scrubs and waxes floors. • Removes trash from buildings, stocks beverage machines. • Paints buildings and equipment, changes air filters, building intakes/ discharges, and light bulbs, cleans vents. • Mows grass around treatment plant facilities, lift stations and other related areas. • Plants and prunes trees and shrubs and maintains landscaping. • Works with hourly employees, relays landscaping and maintenance tasks, trains hourly employees on assigned tasks. • Operates snowplow and blowers to remove snow in winter months. • Removes trash and litter from treatment plant grounds. • Performs light maintenance on landscaping and janitorial equipment, maintains job records. • Inspects safety equipment, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers to make sure they are ready for use. • Transports equipment to service department or vendors for repair. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in building and ground maintenance. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Forklift certification required within two years of appointment. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to make simple mathematical calculations and take measurements. • Ability to read and understand work orders and maintain written job records. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to write work reports. • Knowledge of general landscaping and ground maintenance procedures. • Skill in the operation of various trucks, using end loaders and equipment including mowers, pressure washer, painting equipment, power vacuum, tractors, snow blowers, pneumatic and electrical machinery, and hand tools. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
