Position Title: Maintenance Worker I – Water Customer Service
Department: Public Works

Job Summary
Under immediate direction, reads meters, performs water taps and related water maintenance
distribution and service work including inspection and maintenance of meters, works with
contractors to repair water systems and locate service lines and mains.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Inspects, maintains and changes water meters.
• Works with contractors to repair water systems and provides locates service lines, mains,
and fiber optics, completes a positive response for entry into the Iowa ONE Call system.
• Assists in locating, digging and measuring water lines and mains; handles accidental
water emergencies.
• Assists in the maintenance of malfunctioning water meters.
• Checks meter readings (remotely and manually), reads meters for resets, final billings
and monthly routes.
• Investigates work orders from the water metering system; determines and performs
repairs needed; changes leaky or stopped water meters.
• Performs emergency duties related to water main breaks; responds to after-hour
emergency calls; performs on-call duties as assigned.
• Cards and shuts off water service for nonpayment of bills, unauthorized service,
insufficient funds and payment arrangements not met.
• Performs water taps on ductile and plastic mains, inspects newly installed water meters
for City specifications by contractors.
• Responds to emergency calls for distribution and water service.
• Operates heavy equipment including dump truck and backhoe.
• Performs tapping machine maintenance and tap maintenance inventory, orders machine
parts.
• Contacts public on regular basis to share information, resolve complaints or solve
problems.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in water system
maintenance or related.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade I Water Distribution Certificate preferred or required within 3
years of hire. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license
instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial
driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet
federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18
years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the
corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank
endorsements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved
written or oral instructions.
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to
customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate water consumption
when checking for leaks.
• Ability to read technical materials and maps to locate underground utilities and prepare
written log sheets and records.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to work on-call.
• Ability to write simple correspondence.
• Knowledge of electrical current flow, conductors and grounds.
• Knowledge of meter reading devices and maintenance and repair procedures.
• Knowledge of water distribution system and water services.
• Skills in the use of hand and power tools.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving
mechanical parts, high or precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic

is regularly exposed to outside weather condition, dampness, direct sunlight, dust, pollen,
insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
moderate exposure to dangerous situations. Involves moderate exposure to stress due to the
work environment and/or crisis situations.
