Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – Cemetery

Job Summary
Under general direction, maintains cemetery grounds, equipment, buildings and other public
areas.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Maintains cemetery grounds, mows grass, rakes leaves, and cares for plants and shrubs.
• Trains hourly employees in grounds maintenance and operation of maintenance
equipment.
• Performs various carpentry and remodeling tasks including construction of sidewalks,
monuments, and small concrete pads.
• Maintains cemetery building and repairs plumbing, electrical wiring and hydraulic
systems as needed.
• Assists in cleaning and maintaining shop, equipment and other facilities.
• Assists in locating burial space location and preparing drawings of existing lots.
• Assists with funeral set up of tents, chairs and related equipment, opens and closes
plots.
• Operates and maintains variety of heavy equipment including backhoe, front loader,
tractor, dozer and scraping blades, and trucks.
• Removes snow and ice and distributes salt and sand on cemetery roads, sidewalks and
several other bridges and walks in assigned areas.
• Assists with showing, selling and maintaining records of lot sales, burials, daily log, and
monthly reports.
• Repairs and maintains cemetery equipment.
• Assists the public in a caring and compassionate manner; assists with completing sale
forms for lots, paperwork and genealogy.
• Responds to storm call-ins and other emergencies.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in grounds
maintenance.
• Forklift and backhoe certification must be obtained within the probationary period. Valid
State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age.
Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of related experience or training; or
equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to maintain daily records and prepare written reports.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to maintain daily records and prepare written reports.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements.
• Ability to read and interpret maps and technical manuals, safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

• Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical work and carpentry.
• Knowledge of cemetery rules and regulations.
• Knowledge of turf and ground maintenance.
• Skill in operating and maintaining heavy and light equipment used in cemetery
maintenance.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use
hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally
required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee
regularly lifts and/or moves 25 pounds and will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves
