Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – Wastewater Treatment

Job Summary
Under general direction, assists with performs general maintenance and repairs of plant
processing equipment and lift stations. Performs specialized construction, modifications and
installation of equipment and structures.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Assists in maintenance on sewer systems including excavation and rebuilding or
replacing sewer pipes.
• Assists with repairs or rebuilds of pumps, valves and all fluid handling components and
reduction pressure zone or backflow preventer.
• Assists on installations and repairs of plumbing systems including gravity and pressure
lines, chemical, gas, drain piping and sewer taps.
• Assists in cleaning and repairing boilers.
• Operates a variety of heavy equipment including trash pumps, backhoes, tractors, dump
trucks, jet vacuum truck and others.
• Performs routine checks of pumps and filters at lift stations; records hour usage and
maintains other records, collects wastewater samples and submits to lab for analysis.
• Collects and disposes of grit, bar screenings and lift station trash basket contents.
• Performs on-call duties, responds to emergencies of equipment failure at Wastewater
treatment plant, lift stations and collection system.
• Participates in safety committee and identification of workplace hazards.
• Enters paperwork and logs information into computer.
• Meets with utility employees, contractors and the general public regarding sewer
complaints and locations.
• Assists with video camera truck to inspect sanitary sewers and storm sewers for inflow
and infiltration, structural defects, and blockages.
• Cross trains in plant maintenance and sewer collection system assignments.
• Assists Electronics Technician, Treatment Plant Operators and Maintenance Operators on
assigned tasks.

• Performs building and grounds maintenance.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of related experience or training; or
equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in equipment repair
and maintenance or related.
• Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction
permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license
with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Forklift certification
required within two years of appointment. Meet federal drug testing requirements.
Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal
background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa
within one year of appointment to the position.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade I Wastewater Operator certificate. Flagging training. Backflow
prevention certification. Confined space entry training.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and compute volumes, pipe sizes and
diameters, and lengths.
• Ability to prepare written instructions and work records.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Knowledge of wastewater treatment procedures.
• Skill in the operation of a dump truck, jib boom and the use of hand and power tools.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).

animals, and communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
