HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWII - Water ServiceUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Maintenance Worker II – Water Service Department: Public Works Division: Water Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Water / Water Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 7 Job Number: 0714 Job Summary Under general direction, performs location of underground water and fiber utilities, water taps and related water customer service work. Investigates customer service complaints. Installs, maintains and repairs the City’s water distribution system. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Ensures that water is safe and clean for the community through proper operation and maintenance of the distribution system. • Checks meter readings (remotely and manually), reads meters for resets and final billings. • Investigates work orders initiated by meter readers for malfunctions and makes needed repairs. • Inspects newly installed water meters for City specifications, changes leaky or stopped water meters. • Locates underground water utilities and charts up-to-date measurements on stop valves and mains, completes a positive response for entry into the Iowa ONE Call system. • Locates underground fiber optic utilities and charts up-to-date measurements on fiber optic infrastructure, completes final main and fiber traces for sign off on overall project completion, completes a positive in the Water Division website for entry into the Iowa ONE Call system. • Trains and assists other locators for residential, industrial and City projects as assigned. • Cards and shuts off water service for non-payment of bills, unauthorized service, insufficient fund checks and for payment arrangements not met. • Performs water taps on ductile, iron, and plastic mains. • Provides information and assistance to customers regarding City utility services, assists customers in resolving problems related to customer accounts or City procedures. • Completes water main and fiber standbys for contractors to ensure water/fiber is not damaged during construction on or near the main/fiber. • Assists in training meter readers. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Investigates customer complaints of leaks, high bills, and water quality, inspects fixtures and determines source of leaks, low pressure and other problems. • Assists distribution staff with final flush and pressure testing on new subdivisions and private services. • Implements and monitors back flow prevention tester program, as assigned. • Performs emergency duties related to water main breaks, responds to after-hour emergency calls. • Operates backhoe, concrete breaker, and dump trucks. • Responds to emergency calls for service, makes necessary repairs to water system. • Completes paperwork in a timely manner to document daily projects, activities, and appointments. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution, or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in water services, water distribution, installation, or repair. • State of Iowa DNR Grade I Water Distribution Certificate required within one year of hire. State of Iowa DNR Grade II Water Distribution Certificate required within three years of hire. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class B commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience, or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate water consumption when checking for leaks. • Ability to prepare written log sheets, routine reports, and records. • Ability to read technical materials and maps to locate underground utilities, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Knowledge of electrical current flow, conductors and grounds. • Knowledge of meter reading devices and maintenance and repair procedures. • Knowledge of water distribution system and water services. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). • Skills in the use of hand and power tools. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
