HomeMy WebLinkAboutMWIII - CemeteryUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Maintenance Worker III – Cemetery Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Cemetery Supervisor: Cemetery Supervisor FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 8 Job Number: 0807 Job Summary Under general direction, leads and participates in all phases of cemetery operations and maintenance. Maintains cemetery grounds, equipment and other assigned public areas. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Maintains cemetery grounds and other assigned areas including construction, cement work, plumbing, electrical work and carpentry. • Repairs, modifies and maintains equipment, small tractors and attachments, gas powered lawn mowers, cord trimmers, edgers and chain saws. • Orders parts and supplies to fix equipment. • Works on special projects such as Avenue of Flags to include receiving donations, ordering materials, installing and maintaining records. • Operates light and heavy trucks and tractors with a variety of attachments. • Removes snow and ice and distributes salt and sand on cemetery roads, sidewalks and several other bridges and walks in assigned areas. • Leads and trains employees in work assignments. • Shows and sells burial spaces. assists in locating burial spaces and preparing drawings of existing lots. • Arranges funeral set up of tents, chairs and related equipment. • Receives funeral service information from funeral directors or family members and answers inquiries regarding general funeral services operations. • Maintains records of equipment and maintenance activity. • Assists in obtaining quotes for new equipment and tools for annual budget. • Responds to storm call-ins and other emergencies. • Oversees cemetery responsibilities when Cemetery Supervisor is absent. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or two years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in grounds maintenance. • Forklift and backhoe certification must be obtained by end of probationary period. Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to maintain daily records and prepare written reports. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements. • Ability to read and interpret maps and technical manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Ability to work with customers who are upset and emotional. • Knowledge of cemetery rules and regulations. • Knowledge of general construction methods including basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical construction, and landscaping. • Knowledge of turf and ground maintenance. • Skill in operating and maintaining heavy and light equipment used in cemetery maintenance. • Skill in the use of hand and power tools. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook).
