Position Title: Maintenance Worker III – Wastewater Collection

Job Summary
Under general direction, operates heavy equipment and serves as a group leader in performing
general construction, inspection, evaluation, maintenance, and repairs of sewer mains and
related facilities.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Operates a jet vacuum truck, sewer tapping machine, easement machine, trash pumps
and other heavy equipment.
• Runs television truck to troubleshoot and inspect storm sewer and sanitary lines,
including inflow and infiltration inspection.
• Utilizes specific software applications required by television truck to prepare inspection
reports.
• Repairs and maintains sewer pipe, manholes and facilities.
• Prepares and executes traffic control plans.
• Cleans sanitary and storm sewer and checks lines for blockages.
• Constructs sewer taps.
• Meets with utilities, contractors, and general public regarding sewer complaints.
• Provides locations for utility work and new construction.
• Assists Maintenance Operators in cleaning and maintenance of wet wells and dry wells
at the Wastewater treatment plant and lift stations.
• Collects samples and submits to lab for analysis.
• Leads work teams working on various aspects of sewer maintenance and repairs.
• Trains, delegates, and monitors other personnel in repair and maintenance of sewer
mains.
• Establishes technical procedures and standards.
• Performs on-call duties, responds to emergencies of equipment failure at the
Wastewater treatment plant, lift stations and collection system.
• Enters log of complaints and work records into computer, prepares reports.

• Assists Engineers and other technicians in conducting inflow and infiltration studies with
special techniques, procedures, and equipment.
• Installs, maintains and evaluates special equipment.
• Utilizes software applications such as mapping, databases, spreadsheets and word
processing to log activities and prepare reports.
• Utilizes safety equipment and safety programs in performing duties.
• Participates in safety committee work.
• Locates sewer lines for excavating, tree planting, fences and other projects when work is
performed in area of sewers.
• Provides snow removal for wastewater facilities.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or three years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Experience in wastewater sewer main construction and
maintenance. Experience with permit required confined space entry and issuing of entry
permits, site supervision and entry of said confined spaces.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade I Wastewater Operator certificate. State of Iowa DNR Grade II
Wastewater Operator certificate required within 2 years of appointment. Flagger
certification. Forklift certification required within two years of appointment. Confined
space entry training. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s
license instruction permit upon first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A
commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of
hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen.
Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles
of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Competent person training in shoring and trenching. Association of Boards of
Certification Wastewater Collection certificate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to operate computer and prepare written logs and reports.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate flow rates, water
volumes and capacities.
• Ability to read and comprehend maps, blueprints, maintenance manuals and
specifications, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to set up and use traffic control safety systems.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Ability to use lift systems, entry and exit safety and gas detectors relative to confined
spaces.
• Knowledge of blood borne pathogens safety and personal protective equipment usage.
• Knowledge of lift station operations and related equipment.
• Knowledge of storm and sanitary sewer system including size, location and flow rate.
• Skill in the operation of heavy equipment including a jet vacuum truck, end loader and
backhoe.
• Skill in the operation of sewer tap machine and easement machine.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

animals, and communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
