Job Summary
Supervises the mechanical, financial, and operational activities of the Iowa City Transit system.
Oversees the Transit fleet services shop. Assists staff with issues and concerns regarding transit
fleet.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Dispatches, directs and supports transit street operations and maintenance activities.
• Supervises on-street operations to ensure policy and schedule adherence.
• Coordinates schedule and route deviations caused by weather and traffic.
• Develops emergency reroutes.
• Assists in planning for new routes and service expansion and/or reduction.
• Reports vehicle defects and malfunctions to mechanics, reviews vehicle status daily.
• Regularly communicates with driving and administrative staff on the status of bus
repairs and educates staff on vehicle maintenance issues.
• Reviews and verifies time records.
• Provides necessary information for accurate and timely payroll processing.
• Monitors and maintains farebox system.
• Counts revenue from prior day’s receipts.
• Prepares deposits.
• Manages all fleet systems including automatic vehicle location system, electric bus
charging system, and video equipment.
• Ensures the Transit app and/or website is accurately reflecting bus location and
predicted arrival times.
• Checks work orders and requests to verify parts and labor are charged out correctly and
coordinates warranty repairs with dealers.
• Coordinates scheduling and completion of maintenance, body work and equipment
repairs for fixed route and paratransit fleet to ensure sufficient buses to maintain
service delivery.
• Performs equipment repairs.

• Performs initial, in progress and final inspections of work performed by the line
mechanics.
• Responds to service calls in the field and substitutes for Parts/Data Entry Clerk and
mechanics in as needed.
• Investigates accidents/incidents involving operators, passengers or other motorists.
• Monitors parts room inventory, tire inventory and personnel needs.
• Creates reports and maintains records of work performed to ensure compliance with
Federal and State regulations.
• Orders and acquires parts and equipment.
• Writes vehicle and equipment specifications.
• Provides tours of transit facility and participates in community relations activities.
• Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from the general public.
• Maintains safety plans related to weather and other emergencies.
• Participates on transit safety committee.
• Leads and attends regularly scheduled staff meetings and ad-hoc meetings as assigned.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs all other related duties.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in
Automotive Technology, Business, Accounting, Management, or related.
• Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa
Class B commercial driver’s license with air brakes and passenger endorsement required
within 90 days of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. A pre-employment drug
screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience. Experience in accounting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of
managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to learn and apply complex policies and procedures.

• Ability to perform mathematical calculations necessary to perform payroll functions and
basic bookkeeping functions.
• Ability to read and understand written materials and maps, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to supervise and motivate employees.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in
completing daily tasks and assignments. May perform additional supervisory duties at the direction of
the Department or Division Head to include disciplinary action, assisting with hiring or firing, and writing
or delivering performance reviews.
