HomeMy WebLinkAboutPolice OfficerUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Police Officer Department: Police Division: Field Operations or Support Services Supervisor: Police Sergeant FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 40 Job Number: 4001 Job Summary Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in the enforcement of the law, maintenance of order, protection of life and property and prevention of crime; and performs related work as required. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Patrols all assigned areas for the prevention of crime and enforcement of laws and ordinances, investigates any suspicious conditions, activities, and persons, responds to requests for police services and takes appropriate action. • Arrests violators of laws and ordinances, has violators booked and charged, escorts prisoners to jail and court when needed, performs as undercover agent and maintains stakeouts and surveillance. • Watches for and makes investigations on wanted/missing persons and stolen property, impounds stolen property. • Conducts preliminary or follow up investigations, obtains and preserves evidence, interrogates witnesses and obtains statements, obtains and records measurements and draws sketches. • Prepares written/ typed investigative reports and documentation. • Directs traffic at times of emergency or congestion, stops and issues citations to drivers operating vehicles in violation of law. • Serves subpoenas and warrants. • Must be able to render credible court testimony. • Testifies in court and follows through with investigation of court depositions. • Operates radio/computer equipment at the station or in patrol vehicles. • Answers public inquiries about information or directions, prepares and presents speeches to schools and other agencies on safety, juvenile problems and procedures. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. • Iowa Peace Officer Certification required and completion of Iowa City Police Department’s Field Training Program. Eligible to carry a firearm under state and federal laws. Valid State of Iowa driver's license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree or coursework in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement or related. Experience in law enforcement. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, and circumference. • Ability to complete a variety of written reports and citations which may be used in a court of law. • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely orally or in writing. • Ability to gather, assemble, analyze and evaluate facts and evidence and draw sound conclusions. • Ability to handle situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and impartially. • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Ability to observe facts and situations analytically and objectively and record them clearly and completely. • Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Ability to use good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. • Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, practices and equipment; applicable city, state and federal laws; the purpose of law enforcement and criminal justice system. • Skill in obtaining valid information by interview and interrogation. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). • Skill in the use of firearms, defense tactics and related law enforcement equipment.
