HomeMy WebLinkAboutRecreation AssistantUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Recreation Assistant Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Recreation Supervisor: Recreation Superintendent FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 4 Job Number: 0418 Job Summary Under direction, assists with the operations of swimming pool activities, customer service areas and recreation facilities as assigned. Maintains a pleasant, safe and sanitary environment while providing general guidance for hourly aquatic and customer service staff. Provides a positive recreation experience for patrons. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Assists with enforcing department rules, regulations and health, safety and sanitation policies. • Organizes reports and tracks general records and data such as material data safety sheets, user participation counts, registration/reservation reports and swim lesson rosters. • Assists with recruiting, training, scheduling and providing general guidance to hourly pool and customer service staff, monitors hours of hourly staff. • Interacts with the general public and may handle complaints, concerns and suggestions. • Assists with marketing such as designing flyers and providing input into seasonal activity guide materials, assists in event programming and outreach. • Fills in for lifeguards, cashiers, lesson instructors, customer service staff and Program Supervisor – Aquatics as needed. • Assists in providing training courses such as CPR/First-Aid and LGI / WSIT training courses, and in service. • Collects pool samples for laboratory analysis and regular chemical tests for daily recording. Assists with general cleaning and maintenance activities such as backwashing, water balancing and general troubleshooting. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in aquatic operations. • Lifeguard Instructor Certification (LGI), Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and CPR/First- Aid/AED Instructor certifications within 90 days of hire. WSIT within one year of hire. Valid State of Iowa driver's license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass a criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. • Lifeguard Certification and Water Safety Instructor Certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. • Ability to prepare written materials, including records, reports and promotional materials. • Ability to read and interpret reports and journals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Knowledge and skills in the techniques of facility management and supervision of personnel. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
