HomeMy WebLinkAboutScalehouse OperatorUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Scalehouse Operator Department: Public Works Division: Resource Management Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent – Landfill FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 3 Job Number: 0308 Job Summary Under immediate direction, operates scale to weigh refuse and other items brought in and out of the City Landfill by customers. Collects fees and prepares daily deposits. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Operates scale to weigh refuse and other items brought in and out of the City Landfill by customers, prepares correct charge tickets for separate items, and collects fees. • Provides directions and education to customers on where to deliver Landfill items by regulations. • Prepares daily deposits, tallies receipts, balances cash drawer. • Enters data and information into reporting and tracking systems. • Answers the telephone and directs calls and questions to the appropriate parties, receives messages. • Tracks daily time for hourly workers. • Cleans the scale platform, removes snow, ice, mud, and other debris, as needed. • Removes litter from Landfill area and building. • Purchases office supplies and first aid/safety supplies. • Cleans scalehouse area regularly, performs general custodial duties. • Provides startup and shutdown of scale and scalehouse area. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Complete State of Iowa Oath of Weighmaster. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in cashiering or customer service. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to handle money and make change. • Ability to interface positively with staff and customers. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and make change. • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, special waste forms and permits. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to write simple correspondence. • Knowledge of landfill rules and regulations. • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). • Skills in operating computerized scale and a calculator. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
