Job Summary
Plans, coordinates and administers City programs for older adults, including management and
support for conducting fundraising and stewardship activities.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Collaborates with a representative group of staff, participants, the Senior Center
Commission and advisory groups and community members to develop, articulate and
promote a vibrant vision for the Senior Center that establishes meaningful engagement
and active support for older adults and generates enthusiasm for the Senior Center
within the community.
• Coordinates/oversees the activities of individuals providing volunteer services to the
Senior Center ’s programs.
• Participates in select Senior Center programs and maintains day-to-day interactions with
participants and visitors.
• Represents the Senior Center and actively participates with community-based groups,
committees and boards that focus on aging-related issues.
• Establishes networks among people, organizations and businesses that will support and
further the Senior Center ’s mission.
• Serves as the City spokesperson in the community on aging and services.
• Manages the allocation of space for internal and external users of the Senior Center and
oversees rental usage agreements and tenant contracts, responds to facility user
requests and complaints.
• Provides staff support and technical assistance to the Senior Center Commission.
• Prepares, administers and monitors the department’s operational and capital budgets.
• Serves as staff liaison to Friends of the Senior Center ’s Board of Directors, participates in
developing and implementing all fundraising and management activities of the group,
serves as Treasurer/Secretary of the Friends Board of Directors.
• Develops participant and community-based evaluation strategies to assess current
programs and services for relevance, access, and cost, analyzes program results and
implements changes.

• Manages the use and terms of independent contractor agreements.
• Reports to the City Council and Johnson County Board of Supervisors on operations,
programming and proposed changes and requests.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and three to five years of
related experience; or seven years of related experience and/or equivalent combination
of education and experience. Degree in Social Work, Gerontology, or related. Experience
in senior services and administration.
• Must pass criminal background check.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution and five years of related
experience; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in
fundraising.
• Certification in CPR and the use of an external automated defibrillator.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with employee groups, special interest groups, other
agencies and city departments, and the general public.
• Ability to develop and present mathematical budget information.
• Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or
boards of directors.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports and journals, financial
reports, and legal documents.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory
agencies, or members of the business community.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style
and format.
• Knowledge and skill in fundraising.
• Knowledge of current and projected trends in aging and aging services.

• Knowledge of the evolving needs and interests of aging residents; available community,
state, and federal resources; and social issues and events affecting the wellbeing of the
aging population.
• Skill in management, listening, negotiation, and oral and written communication.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
Assists with the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of a program function or unit for
the department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's
policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include supervising direct reports including
interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; writing
and delivering performance reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing
complaints and resolving problems; and terminating employees.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Duties are generally performed in
an office setting with a controlled environment. The job requires sitting for extended periods of
