HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior MW - Parking & TransitUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Senior Maintenance Worker – Parking & Transit Department: Transportation Services Division: Parking Supervisor: Operations Supervisor FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 14 Job Number: 1413 Job Summary Under general direction, repairs and maintains transit and parking facilities, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and other operating equipment, passenger waiting shelters and fare boxes. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Repairs, maintains and monitors building systems at the transit facilities including downtown interchange facility, Court Street Center, parking ramps to include overhead doors, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, air, automated bus wash, landscaping, spitters, gates, computerized building controls, passenger waiting shelters, doors and handicapped door openers, card readers and power pads. • Repairs and maintains methane abatement including monitoring of equipment, pumps, lines and wells. • Oversees fire inspection and back flow prevention inspections; ensures compliance. • Cleans storage areas and shelters and performs grounds maintenance. • Repairs and maintains shelters, fare boxes, counters, destination signs, upholstery, steam cleaning equipment, parking entrance, exit equipment and other items and equipment. • Schedules preventive maintenance for garage entrance and exit equipment, including ticket spitters, monthly card readers, gates, cash registers, register printers, ramp lighting, automated pay stations, coin machines, meters, cases and posts. • Examines transit and parking facilities and shelters for needed repairs and maintenance; makes recommendations for major work. • Orders and inventories janitorial supplies and equipment, building supplies and parts, fare box parts and parking equipment. • Schedules and monitors the work of contractors, oversees the cleaning of transit facility. • Ensures work is performed in a safe manner for the division which includes maintaining of material safety data sheet, personal protective equipment, and lockout tagout. • Assists in writing specifications for contracting of items including obtaining quotes and pricing; assists with development of budget figures for maintenance, accounts for expenditures on a monthly basis. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Supervises and performs snow and ice removal from lots, ramps, and other public spaces. • Supervises and performs paint striping of parking stalls and crosswalks in the downtown. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in building maintenance. • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, electrical and plumbing repairs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate surface areas, volumes, watts and resistances. • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. • Ability to prepare written work instructions and reports. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Knowledge of basic construction techniques. • Knowledge of building maintenance procedures, carpentry and electrical and mechanical systems. • Skill in use of a floor sweeper, transit coach, welder, mower, snow blower, steam cleaner, tractor and hand and power tools. • Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook). Supervision Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
