Home My WebLink AboutSenior MW - StreetsUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Senior Maintenance Worker – Streets Department: Public Works Division: Streets & Traﬃc Engineering Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent/Superintendent of Streets & Traﬃc Engineering FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 14 Job Number: 1407 Job Summary Under direction, directs work crews and participates in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets and related facilities. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Directs assigned work crews and participates in the repair and replacement of concrete and asphalt in the City streets and snow removal operations. • Checks work zones for safety and that crews are working in a safe and secure manner. • Prepares reports and records of daily projects. • Inspects areas that need to be repaired. • Enters and tracks data and information into asset management system, and reconciles purchase card statements. • Oversees and participates in preventative maintenance activities. • Builds and repairs bridge railings, wing walls and catch basins. • Removes concrete from streets, replaces sub-base and sets forms; pours and ﬁnishes concrete. • Relays hot asphalt to City streets for maintenance activities. • Repairs asphalt streets. • Constructs and repairs sidewalks. • Operates heavy equipment including end loader, tractors, motor grader, rollers, backhoe, and dump trucks. • Assists in removing snow, ice and leaves from roadways; assists in road oiling and chipping, cutting of trees and brush. • Removes trees and brush from bridge piers, creek banks and along roadsides. • Orders and inventories materials for jobs as needed. • Assists in design, fabrication and ordering speciﬁcations for new equipment. • Cleans and maintains equipment used in street repairs and construction. • Works with the public to answer questions about projects; resolves complaints. • Works with outside contractors on projects. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Installs and fabricates street signs according to MUTCD Standards. • Implements division goals, policies and procedures established by the Superintendent. • Performs on-call duties. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate’s degree from an accredited educational institution and two years of related experience; or four years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Construction Science or related. Experience in street construction and maintenance work. • Forklift certiﬁcation. Satisfactory driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon ﬁrst day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. National Incident Management System Training ICS 100, IS 700 within two years of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements. Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa within one year of appointment to the position. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. • Ability to eﬀectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees of the organization. • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and to calculate cubic yards and tons to ﬁll cement and asphalt voids. • Ability to prepare written work records. • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, blueprints, sketches and grade markers, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. • Ability to read tape measure to cut lumber or ﬁgure area to order materials, ability to calculate ﬁgures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, and apply basic geometry. • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties. • Knowledge of street maintenance and construction methods and procedures. • Skill in assigning, inspecting and evaluating the work of assigned crew. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) • Skill in operating concrete saw, jack hammer, leave vacuum, loaders, tamper, rollers, chain saws, weed trimmers and mowers. • Skill in operating heavy and complex machinery requiring good spatial perception. • Skill in recordkeeping and the maintenance of oﬃce ﬁles. Supervision Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance review.
