Position Title: Senior Maintenance Worker – Wastewater Collection

Job Summary
Under direction, serves as group leader to assigned work crews and participates in the
maintenance and repair of sewer collection system.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Implements division goals, policies and procedures established by the Wastewater
Superintendent.
• Monitors, inspects, and evaluates the operation of the sewer collection system.
• Schedules and evaluates maintenance activities for the sewer collection system and
assigned work crews including crew assignment and locations.
• Directs and trains assigned work crews; participates in the maintenance and repair of
the sewer collection system.
• Works closely with engineers, field inspectors, and construction crews to coordinate the
planning, installation, and repair of wastewater infrastructure.
• Performs preventive maintenance to sewer collection system duplicate, checks for
proper flow, broken pipes, and general working condition.
• Cleans sewer lines on a regular basis using jet truck, vacuum truck and other tools and
techniques.
• Performs sewer inspections with televising equipment and other tools and techniques.
• Meets with utilities, contractors, and general public regarding sewer complaints
(blockage, odors, pipe breaks).
• Reviews Engineering plans and specifications for sewer projects; provides comments.
• Observes, reviews, and evaluates new construction of sewers and lift stations; inspects
existing rehabilitation and repair projects.
• Provides locations for utility work and new construction, excavating, tree planting,
fences, and other projects when work is performed in area of sewers.
• Completes reports, maintains data, trains staff, and enters information into computer
system including GIS and Asset Management System.
• Orders and purchases parts, supplies, and equipment as needed.

• Coordinates equipment maintenance with the service department.
• Reconciles purchase card statements.
• Performs on-call duties; responds to emergencies of equipment failure at the
Wastewater treatment plant, lift stations and collection system; enters log of complaints
and work records into computer.
• Coordinates with Engineers and other technicians in conducting inflow and infiltration
studies with special techniques, procedures, and equipment.
• Installs, maintains, and evaluates special equipment; prepares reports.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution; or four years of related
experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in
wastewater and sewer collection system maintenance.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade III Wastewater Operator certificate. Confined space entry
training. Forklift certification required within two years of appointment. Satisfactory
driving record. Valid State of Iowa commercial driver’s license instruction permit upon
first day in position. Valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake
and tank endorsements within 6 months of hire. National Incident Management System
Training ICS 100, IS 700 within two years of hire. Meet federal drug testing requirements.
Requires a pre-employment drug screen. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal
background check. Must live within 25 miles of the corporate limits of Iowa City, Iowa
within one year of appointment to the position.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of related
experience; or five years of related experience and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
• State of Iowa DNR Grade IV Wastewater Operator certificate. Competent person training
in shoring and trenching. Association of Boards of Certification Wastewater Collection
certificate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of
managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or
schedule form.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate capacities, flows and
quantities.
• Ability to prepare written reports and logs, business correspondence, and procedure
manuals.

• Ability to read and interpret technical materials and blueprints, specifications, electrical
schematics, gauges, charts and data sheets, and government regulations.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to troubleshoot computers and mechanical equipment malfunctions.
• Knowledge of City sewer collection system including location of manholes, flow direction
and flow rate.
• Knowledge of computerized record-keeping procedures.
• Knowledge of electrical, plumbing and mechanical maintenance methods.
• Skill in organizing and directing multiple projects and work teams simultaneously.
• Skill in the operation specialized equipment used in wastewater treatment processes.
• Skill in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office – Word,
Excel, Outlook).
Supervision
Involves leadership role such as regularly guiding, training, and providing direction to
permanent staff in completing basic, entry-level daily tasks and assignments. Does not carry out
disciplinary action, does not hire or fire, is not responsible for writing or delivering performance
review.
