CITY OF IOWA CITY COUNCIL ACTION REPORT June 18, 2024 Parks and Recreation Month Attachments: Parks and Recreation Month proclamation Cityof i Iowa City PROCLAMATION A, Whereas, parks and recreation is an integral part of communities throughout this country, including Iowa City; and 'a Whereas, parks and recreation promotes health and wellness, improving the physical and mental health of people who live near parks; and Whereas, parks and recreation promotes time spent in nature, which positively impacts mental health by increasing cognitive performance and well-being; and Whereas, parks and recreation encourages physical activities by providing space for popular sports, hiking trails, swimming pools and many other activities designed to promote active lifestyles; and Whereas, parks and recreation increases a community's economic prosperity through job training, increased property values, expansion of the local tax base, increased tourism, the attraction and retention of businesses, and crime reduction; and Whereas, parks and recreation is essential and adaptable infrastructure that makes our communities resilient in the face of natural disasters and climate change; and Whereas, our parks and natural recreation areas ensure the ecological beauty of our community and provide a place for children and adults to connect with nature and recreate outdoors; and Whereas, the U.S. House of Representatives has designated July as Parks and Recreation Month; and Whereas, Iowa City recognizes the benefits derived from parks and recreation resources. Now, therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of July to be Parks and Recreation Month in Iowa City. ,��� of )t ♦ .• Obi w. CITY OF IOWA CITY COUNCIL ACTION REPORT June 18, 2024 Waste and Recycling Workers Week Attachments: Waste and Recycling Workers Week proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the eradication of many diseases in the Western World is due in large part to higher public sanitation standards resulting from effective garbage disposal; and Whereas, the proper collection and disposal of waste, recycling and organic waste are integral to preventing litter and dump heaps; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City values and celebrates dozens of workers in the public and private trash, recycling and yard waste and organics industry in our community; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City promotes environmental sustainability through reducing waste and increasing recycling and composting. Now Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa hereby proclaim the week of June 16 to June 22, 2024, as Waste and Recycling Workers Week in Iowa City, and urge our community members to recognize the valuable role that collection and removal services for trash, recycling and yard waste play in our daily lives. CITY OF OF IOWA CITY COUNCIL ACTION REPORT June 18, 2024 Juneteenth National Freedom Day Attachments: proclamation Late Hando City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION (Date) Whereas, Juneteenth National Freedom Day commemorates June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger led Union soldiers into Galveston, Texas, bringing news that the Civil War had ended and that the Emancipation Proclamation declared all slaves to be free; and Whereas, in 1866, Juneteenth commemorations began to be celebrated—consisting of prayer services, inspirational speeches, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, food, games, and dances; and Whereas, Juneteenth reflects our community' s deep belief in liberty and equality for all individuals; and Whereas, Juneteenth celebrates the strength and resolve of African - Americans throughout history, and is an opportunity to honor African-American culture, art, history, and achievement as all benefit from a greater understanding and appreciation of the experiences of others; and Whereas, the first major Juneteenth celebration in Johnson County was hosted by Club Kazi, a group in 2007 whose name means "to work" in Swahili, and was held on June 26, 2011, at Mercer Park; and Whereas, beginning in 2020, the City of Iowa officially recognizes Juneteenth as a City holiday; and Whereas, community organizations, for profits, not for profit and local governments have come together to host a series of events and celebrations from June 14 –June 19, visit icjuneteenth.com for more details. All events are free and open to the public.
