HomeMy WebLinkAboutCivilian Crime AnalystUpdated: August 2025 (Admin Review) CITY OF IOWA CITY – JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Civilian Crime Analyst Department: Police Division: Support Services Supervisor: Captain of Support Services FLSA: Non-Exempt Civil Service: Yes Pay Grade: 12 Job Number: 28 Job Summary Under general direction, uses a variety of law enforcement related data, including computer-aided dispatch, police reports, and mapping to identify trends to address current issues relating to policing. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all- inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. • Identifies times and areas where crimes are being committed to help guide proactive policing. • Develops and aggregates intelligence to advise police leadership. • Provides presentations on research and analysis to police department and city staff. • Investigates and identifies data points not currently captured that would be beneficial to the department. • Works with all levels of the police department on data collection requests and reports. • Reviews and recommends software and technology related to the collection of data. • Researches, compiles, analyzes, and interprets statistical data from the police department and outside agency reports. • Analyzes criminal intelligence information and prepares intelligence reports. • Collects criminal intelligence information from a variety of sources. • Serves as a departmental liaison with other law enforcement agencies on criminal intelligence. • Coordinates the exchange of interstate and intrastate information pertaining to criminal activity and criminal movement. • Establishes a network of internal and external sources and contacts in identifying criminal trends and conducting intelligence analysis. • Creates and maintains up-to-date computer databases and files on the crimes, criminals, and criminal organizations. • Researches patterns, structures, trends, and movements of criminal groups or individuals and develops recommendations for subsequent investigation. • Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all community members and coworkers. • Performs other duties as assigned. Updated: August 2025 (Admin Review) Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Associate of Arts degree from an accredited educational institution and one year of experience, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a field involving research and analytics. • National Crime Information Center Certification within six months. Must pass a criminal background check. Preferred Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution in Criminal Justice, Law enforcement, or a related field. Understanding of records management systems and computer- aided dispatch. Experience with intelligence analysis and dissemination, statistical analysis, and geographic information systems. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages. • Ability to complete a variety of written reports, including investigative reports, analytical charts, graphs, maps, and GIS. • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. • Ability to manage multiple priorities and complete assignments within designated time deadlines. • Ability to read and understand technical materials, reports, and journals. • Knowledge of computer software and hardware systems • Basic understanding of SQL query language and database structure • Skills in using computers and applicable software applications (Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, Outlook, applicable Crime Analyst software) • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population. • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Supervision No supervision of direct reports.
