Reduction Program
The new Federal Drinking Water Lead and Copper Rule Revisions
took effect on October 16, 2024 and are a comprehensive update to
the Lead and Copper Rule enacted in 1991.
The City has created a Lead Reduction Program to inform residents
about the risk of lead exposure in drinking water from home
plumbing materials, require the replacement of broken lead water
service pipes, and provide resources to mitigate the liabilities
associated with lead or lead contaminated home plumbing
materials. To learn more visit icgov.org/water.
Choose sustainable gift wrap such as last year’s gift-bags, old newspaper or
maps, fabric, or reusable cloth bags. Most store-bought wrapping paper is not
recyclable. Kraft paper is a recommended alternative.
Recycle old holiday lights now through Jan. 5 at the East Side Recycling Center
(via ReStore Donations), the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, and City
Hall (bin located outside of front entrance).
Compost your natural holiday tree at the curb at no additional cost (curbside
customers only). Remove all decorations and do not put the tree in a plastic bag.
Properly dispose of all batteries, including alkaline,
lithium, and rechargeable, at battery drop-off sites.

What CAN’T be recycled at the curb?
Glass • Holiday lights • Metallic or glitter greeting cards • Gift wrapping paper
Tissue paper • Plastic bags/film/wrap • Styrofoam • Toys/shoes/clothing
Batteries can cause
landfill fires. Don’t
put in the trash.
