HomeMy WebLinkAboutOctober 2024 Utility InsertIf you’ll be away for an extended period of time for the holidays, school break or winter vacation, take these extra
precautions to prevent major damage to your home:
1. Leave your heat on. Set your thermostat for 55 degrees or higher to keep pipes from freezing and possibly bursting.
2. Arrange for someone to check your home regularly while you’re away.
3. Promote warm air circulation in the home and around plumbing by opening interior doors and under-sink cabinets.
Leaving for more than 30 days? Consider shutting off your water service
and temporarily deactivating your account to avoid paying water, wastewater,
recycling, and garbage fees while you’re gone. Request account deactivation
at least one week in advance by calling the Water Division. An employee
will shut off your water at either the outside shut-off valve (stop box) in your
yard, or the master valve inside your home. After this, your only charge will
be a monthly stormwater fee of $5. A $45 service fee will be charged to
reconnect to City services when you return.
Leaving this winter? Take some precautions.
For more info, visit icgov.org/water or
contact the Water division at 319-356-5160.
