Whereas, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared its independence from
Belgium on June 30, 1960, marking a major milestone in the global movement for
decolonization and self-govemance; and
Whereas, the DRC is one of the most resource -rich nations in the world, supplying:
• over 70% of the world's cobalt, a critical mineral used in electric vehicle
batteries and renewable energy storage;
• approximately 60% of global coltan (columbite-tantalite), essential for
smartphones, computers, and medical devices;
• significant reserves of copper, ranking among the top 5 producers globally; and
• about 20% of global industrial diamonds, contributing to both commercial and
scientific industries; and
Whereas, these resources are vital to the global economy and play an increasingly
important role in the transition to clean energy, modern communications, and advanced
technologies; and
Whereas, beyond its mineral wealth, the DRC is home to rich and diverse cultures,
including world-renowned music, fashion, languages, and cuisine, with the Congolese
rumba recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity; and
Whereas, Congolese Americans living in [Iowa City] contribute greatly to the life of
our community through business, education, faith, healthcare, public service, and cultural
expression; and

opportunity for all residents to reflect on the values of independence, resilience, and
global interconnection, and to honor the contributions of our Congolese neighbors.
