HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-08-05 ProclamationItem Number: 2.a. a CITY OF IOWA CITY "QR T-4 COUNCIL ACTION REPORT August 5, 2025 National Farmers Market Week Attachments: National Farmers Market Week proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, farmers markets serve as essential hubs for fresh, locally -grown produce and farm -made goods, providing a vital link between our farmers and the communities they nourish; and Whereas, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department has operated the Iowa City Fanners Market for 53 years, growing it into the largest recurring weekly event in Iowa City; and Whereas, these markets foster direct relationships between consumers and growers, offering transparency in food sourcing and supporting local economies; and Whereas, farmers markets create vibrant public spaces, contribute to community health, and celebrate the rich agricultural heritage of our nation; and Whereas, these markets play a critical role in expanding access to nutritious food, promoting sustainable farming practices, and empowering local fanners to thrive; and Whereas, National Farmers Market Week provides an opportunity to recognize the important contributions of fanners markets to the health, economy, and well-being of our communities; and Whereas, this recognition encourages all residents to explore and support their local farmers markets, thereby strengthening the bonds of community and fostering a deeper appreciation for the bounty of our land. Now Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, hereby proclaim the week of August 3 - 9, 2025 as National Farmers Market Week in Iowa City, and urge all residents to join in this observance by visiting their local fanners markets, celebrating our agricultural heritage, and supporting the farmers and vendors who bring fresh, local products to our tables. I, CITY OF IOWA CITY COUNCIL ACTION REPORT August 5, 2025 National Hispanic Heritage Month Attachments: National Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, each year, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the culture, heritage and countless contributions of those whose ancestors were indigenous to Central America, South America, Spain, the Caribbean and parts of North America; and Whereas, what was originally observed in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Johnson was expanded by President Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15; and Whereas, September 15 was chosen because it coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of five "Central American neighbors," as President Lyndon B. Johnson called them —Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Those five nations declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821; and Whereas, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence, also from Spain, on September 16 and September 18, respectively; and Whereas, the Hispanic population represents a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds, all of whom make a positive contribution to educational, non-profit, government and business sectors which reflect the remarkable diversity of the American people; and Whereas, we continue to acknowledge the Hispanic community members who have stayed in the straggle to ensure that everyone in this nation can contribute their talents and have the opportunity to thrive; and Whereas, the Iowa City 2025 Latino Fest will take place on Saturday, August 16th, at the Ped-Mall in Downtown Iowa City from approximately 12:00 pm to 9:30 PM, and all are encouraged to attend.
