PROCLAMATION
Whereas, farmers markets serve as essential hubs for fresh, locally -grown produce and
farm -made goods, providing a vital link between our farmers and the communities they
nourish; and
Whereas, the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department has operated the Iowa City
Fanners Market for 53 years, growing it into the largest recurring weekly event in Iowa
City; and
Whereas, these markets foster direct relationships between consumers and growers,
offering transparency in food sourcing and supporting local economies; and
Whereas, farmers markets create vibrant public spaces, contribute to community
health, and celebrate the rich agricultural heritage of our nation; and
Whereas, these markets play a critical role in expanding access to nutritious food,
promoting sustainable farming practices, and empowering local fanners to thrive; and
Whereas, National Farmers Market Week provides an opportunity to recognize the
important contributions of fanners markets to the health, economy, and well-being of our
communities; and
Whereas, this recognition encourages all residents to explore and support their local
farmers markets, thereby strengthening the bonds of community and fostering a deeper
appreciation for the bounty of our land.
Now Therefore, I, Bruce Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, hereby proclaim the week of
August 3 - 9, 2025 as
National Farmers Market Week
in Iowa City, and urge all residents to join in this observance by visiting their local

National Hispanic Heritage Month
Attachments: National Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation
City of Iowa City
PROCLAMATION
Whereas, each year, the United States observes National Hispanic Heritage Month by
celebrating the culture, heritage and countless contributions of those whose ancestors were
indigenous to Central America, South America, Spain, the Caribbean and parts of North
America; and
Whereas, what was originally observed in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President
Johnson was expanded by President Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on
September 15 and ending on October 15; and
Whereas, September 15 was chosen because it coincides with the Independence Day
celebrations of five "Central American neighbors," as President Lyndon B. Johnson called
them —Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Those five nations
declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821; and
Whereas, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence, also from Spain, on September 16
and September 18, respectively; and
Whereas, the Hispanic population represents a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds,
all of whom make a positive contribution to educational, non-profit, government and business
sectors which reflect the remarkable diversity of the American people; and
Whereas, we continue to acknowledge the Hispanic community members who have stayed in
the straggle to ensure that everyone in this nation can contribute their talents and have the
opportunity to thrive; and
Whereas, the Iowa City 2025 Latino Fest will take place on Saturday, August 16th, at the
Ped-Mall in Downtown Iowa City from approximately 12:00 pm to 9:30 PM, and all are
encouraged to attend.
Now, Therefore, I, Brace Teague, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim September
15th — October 15th, 2025, ss
National Hispanic Heritage Month
and encourage all to celebrate our unique and vibrant history and recommit ourselves to a shared
future of a healthy, peaceful, safe and welcoming Iowa City.
