Job Summary
Under general direction, performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of the plaza, parking
facilities and adjacent areas in the Central Business District/North Side Market Place.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Performs ground litter and leaf removal in the pedestrian plaza and adjacent areas in the
Central Business District, North Side Market Place, parking ramps and parking lots.
• Performs maintenance to facilities and site furnishings including posting pillar bulletin
boards, drinking fountains, trellis, tree gates, ash urns, trash receptacles, benches, bike
racks, etc.
• Operates power washer to clean park benches, brick, graffiti, stonework etc.
• Performs minor construction repairs to brick walk areas.
• Assists with painting projects in the downtown area including painting parking stalls,
crosswalks and parking lots/ramps in the downtown area.
• Performs snow and ice removal in the pedestrian plaza, parking ramps, parking lots and
other snow route areas as assigned.
• Performs minor to moderate mechanical repairs on equipment and performs routine
maintenance in tools and equipment.
• Operates pickup trucks, power sweepers, skid steer loader, mowers, power washers,
cord trimmers, snow blowers and other specialized equipment.
• Troubleshoots, repairs and performs maintenance for garage entrance and exit
equipment, including ticket spitters, monthly card readers, gates, point of sale devices,
ramp lighting, automated pay stations, meters, cases and posts.
• Assists with collecting parking meter money.
• Performs parking cashier duties on occasion, receives parking tickets from customers,
collects money and makes change in the City’s parking facilities.
• Obtains and sets up equipment, tools and materials needed for work.
• Performs plumbing and electrical repairs, repairs and/or reports vandalism.
• Pulls weeds, cleans work site and spills, builds forms, mixes, pours and finishes concrete.

• Performs safety checks on vehicles, equipment and tools, completes incident reports,
inspection sheets and other forms.
• Conducts self in a professional manner which demonstrates courtesy and respect for all
community members and coworkers.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, Certification/Licensure, Other
• High school education or G.E.D. and four to six months of related experience or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in grounds
maintenance.
• Forklift certification required within probationary period. Valid State of Iowa driver’s
license with satisfactory driving record. Must be 18 years of age. Must pass criminal
background check.

• High school education or G.E.D. and seven to twelve months of related experience or
training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized
situations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the
general public.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, to read and understand work orders and
to maintain written job records.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties.
• Ability to responsibly perform assignments without immediate supervision.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Knowledge of general maintenance and repair of municipal grounds and facilities
including custodial materials and equipment, light construction, plumbing, electrical and
carpentry techniques and equipment.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions.
• Skill in the operation and routine maintenance of various equipment including power
vacuums, sweepers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, cord trimmers, and a variety of power
tools.

• Skill in working with customer service and money handling.
Supervision
No supervision of direct reports.

insect stings, and animals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Involves

to stress due to the work environment and/or crisis situations.
