HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-09-29 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the City of Iowa City is committed to ensuring the safety and security who live in and visit our city; and Whereas, fire is a serious public safety concern, both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and Whereas, roughly 3,000 people die as a result of home fires and burns, more than 200,000 individuals are seen in the nation's emergency rooms for burns and injuries; and Whereas, thermal burns outnumber scalds nearly two-to-one, but for the children ages five and under, scalds outnumber burns two-to-one; and Whereas, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, while heating equipment and smoking are the leading causes of home fire deaths; and Whereas, the Iowa City Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and Whereas, Iowa City's residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and Whereas, residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and Whereas, the 2009 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned," effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year-round. NOW therefore, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim October 4th -10~h, 2009 as Fire Prevention Week in Iowa City, and urge all the people of the city to protect their homes and families by heeding the important safety messages of Fire Prevention Week 2009, and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Iowa City's Fire Depa ent and emergency services. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowc this 29`x' day of September City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, severe anxiety disorders, borderline personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorders affect one in every five families annually; and WHEREAS, severe mental illnesses are more common than cancer, diabetes and .heart disease and are the number one reason for hospital admissions nationwide; and WHEREAS, severe mental illnesses have been scientifically proven to be highly treatable illnesses of the brain; and WHEREAS, scientific research is producing tremendous breakthroughs in the understanding of mental illnesses resulting in more effective treatments that allow people to reclaim full and productive lives; and WHEREAS, severe mental illnesses continue to be shrouded in stigma and discrimination from societal prejudice causing those who are affected to be second-class citizens; and WHEREAS, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Johnson County is recognizing October 4-10 as Mental Illness Awareness Week; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Regenia D. Bailey, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa do hereby proclaim the week of October 4-10, 2009 as: Mental Illness Awareness Week to increase public awareness of severe mental illness.
