HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-07-15 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed by the United States Congress on July 26, 1990, to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities, and Whereas, the organization known as Evert Conner Rights & Resources Center for Independent Living wishes to make known to the general public the importance of this Act, and Whereas, people with disabilities - mental, physical or emotional - are individuals in and of themselves, and need the respect and support of others if they are to become independent and self-supporting, and Whereas, the City Council wishes to express support for the efforts of the members of the Evert Conner Rights & Resources Center for Independent Living. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2003, to be Persons with Disabilities Day and urge all citizens to become av~are of and support the intent of The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Independent Living philosophy which dictates that persons with disabilities take control and their lives. Anniversary o£The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen in the Iowa City area of the state of Iowa, this organization was originally founded by William Booth in 1865; and Whereas, throughout its long and distinguished history, The Salvation Army-the pre-eminent organization for reaching the disenfranchised of society through love and compassion by meeting physical and spiritual needs - has inspired millions of people to join forces and unite to help those who are in need, with the highest ideals of "Service to Others;" and Whereas, throu~ Thc Salvation Army, the disenfranchised find hope, gain self confidence and skills for success, and learn their duty to the world around them; and Whereas, The Salvatm Army joins with businesses and communities to reach people of all ages, race, and faith to encourage them to take active roles in theft communities through their reciprocal participation in "Service to Others;" and Whereas, through The Salvation Army more than $,000 volunteers in the Johnson County area gave more than 27,000 hours of service last year, to help provide compassionate care, including over 30,000 nutritious meals through the evening meal program of The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen; and Whereas, The Salvation Army, an army of caring people - over 3 million at last count - enables service to the needy in communities across the United States. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of July 20-26 to be: The Salvation Army Soup Kitchen Week in Iowa City. Weber was a lifelong resident of Iowa City, Iowa, from December 19, 1900 to March 16, 1997; and Whereas, Irving Weber for many years shared his memories and historical facts with his fellow Iowa Citians; and Whereas, the Iowa City Host Noon Lions Club, of which Mr. Weber was a member, has published eight books of Mr. Weber's which set forth an invaluable history of Iowa City; and Whereas, on December 12, 1989, in demonstration of the community's appreciation for the historical legacy which Mr. Weber furnished for us, the Iowa City City Council bestowed upon Irving B. Weber the title of Official Historian of Iowa City; and Whereas, it is only fitting that the Iowa City community honor Irving Weber's work and remember Iowa City's history with a community festival, highlighted this year by the dedication of a sculpture of his likeness on Iowa Avenue in his beloved city. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim Saturday, August 9, 2003, to be Irving B.
