HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-07-15 Appointment NOTICE THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING BOARD: AIRPORT ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT One vacancy - Unexpired Term Ending December 31,2003 The powers and duties of the Airport Zoning Board of Adjustment are: 1. To hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the Airport Zoning Chapter. 2. To hear and decide special exceptions to the terms of the Airport Zoning Chapter upon which such board is required to pass under the Airport Zoning Chapter. 3. To authorize upon appeal in specific cases such variance from the terms of the Airport Zoning Chapter as will not be contrary to the public interest, where owing to special conditions a literal enforcement of the provisions of the Airport Zoning Chapter will result in unnecessary hardship, and so that the spirit of the Airport Zoning Chapter shall be observed and substantial justice done. Iowa City-appointed members of boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of Iowa City. The Board meets at the call of the Chairperson. NOTICE THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING COMMISSION: HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION One Vacancy - Three Year Term (1) Woodlawn District Representative March 29, 2003 - March 29, 2006 Duties of the Historic Preservation Commission include: conducting studies for the identification and designation of Historic Districts; reviewing and acting upon ali applications for Certificate of Appropriateness; cooperating with property owners and city agencies regarding remedy of dangerous conditions; furthering the efforts of historic preservation in the City by making recommendations on preservation issues, when appropriate, by encouraging the historical, architectural or cultural value, and by encouraging persons and organizations to become involved in preservation activities. This Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m and, if necessary, the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Iowa City appointed members of the boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of Iowa City. Ms. Blessing was hired by Goodwill Industries of Southeast Iowa to serve as ROSS Vocational Specialist in June of 2002. Prior to obtaining the position of Vocational Specialist, Ms. Blessing worked for Goodwill as a Job Coach and was responsible for providing supported employment to people with disabilities at a variety of community-based worksites. During her first year with the ROSS Program, Ms. Blessing developed and implemented program management and employment placement services to individuals with disadvantaging conditions who have experienced barriers to full employment. Some of her duties include, but are not limited to, assisting participants with obtaining and completing employment applications, writing resumes and cover letters, practicing interviewing techniques, providing on-the-job training and support, reviewing childcare issues and options, researching transportation options, and exploring educational resources. Furthermore, Ms. Blessing has designed and implemented ongoing basic computer classes and a ROSS webpage for participants and employers, created a Jobline that participants can call to hear up-to-date job listings, offered no-cost budgeting classes through the Iowa State University Extension Office, and partnered with the Mayor's Youth Employment Program to offer low-cost bicycles to non-driving ROSS participants. After earning a B.A. degree in Honors English from the University of Iowa in May, 2001, Ms. Blessing coordinated enrichment activities for 65 students in federally funded after school program at Roundy Elementary in Columbus Junction, Iowa. Ms. Blessing also expanded the services offered to 21st Century participants and their families through adult ed classes, an after school tutoring program, family nights, and performance of quality and interest surveys. Additionally, Ms. Blessing interviewed, trained, and supervised educational associates, and translated informational materials from English to Spanish. In conjunction with her 21st Century role, Ms. Blessing was employed by Muscatine Community College teaching beginning and intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adult students. Ms. Blessing previously gained valuable experience providing services to a variety of populations: As a Chemical Dependency Technician at MECCA, the Mid-East Council on Chemical Addictions in Iowa City, Iowa, Ms. Blessing was accountable for supervising the orientation process and daily activities of clients in a residential treatment setting.
