We want people .... to ride Iowa city transit .... talked a lot .... curb ramp itself is clean .... Who is responsible for removing that area of snow. Parking .... parking on one side of the street rule. Maybe on Fridays you have to move your cars so we could clean the streets .... Also talked about 2:00 to 6:00 AM rule d.t. You have to remove your car or get towed. A solution like you could park in the ramp until 10:00 AM the next day and you would have to pay for that .... Window stickers ..... put it in your window .... Meters on Iowa Avenue ..... ramp... park over night or if people could have pre- paid debit cards in the future .... or charge ramp costs on their u-bill .... freshmen and sophomores not being able to park on campus .... Thornberry/We had some of the same conversations .... Transit .... didn't know what the routes were .... timing... They might use the buses more if they could buy a bus pass and out it on their u-bill. / You can. Thornberry/All right, start selling them .... route schedules .... map... needs to be bigger .... need to get better of the education of the routes. Screen savers, mouse pads.. that shows the bus routes .... signs at bus stops .... we need some more information at the bus stops .....Let us know where the routes are going for the buses. Making the buses look cool .... Parking ..... increase time limits on some of the meters .... more University ramps .... I ask what you would ~pay for a parking space in Chauncey Swan, top floor, for a semester. Not too much .....Student car storage. We can do that. It is called the impound lot. Bike racks... all over the University ....bike lanes. Do we still have bike lanes? Davidson/A few. Thornberry/Location of the racks. Annual parking .....more... bike routes ....education... of bike routes ..... 3. Baker/ .... Some things that we covered that were common to all the groups... parking problems .... snow removal and how it affects certain streets. Suggestions about routes being rearranged... talked about review .... more areas of town that really don't have service... Those areas that might have a higher generation of riders... We talked about downtown .... make it more convenient to eliminate parking is to have more apartments d.t .....Certain services probably could be located d.t. to help people who live in the area so they wouldn't need to travel as much ....for example, a really good grocery store somewhere close to d.t .... One person talked about limiting d.t. liquor licenses. Some arrangement of the transit schedule to take into account late night, activities .... having a midnight run... encourage people to stay off the streets .... This represents only a reasonably accurate transcription of the Iowa City council meeting of February 18, 1997 WS021897 February 18, 1997 Council Work Session-UI Student Senate page 3 Safety issues .... good suggestion... Why isn't it possible for the city to have the same sort of arrangements in parts of neighborhoods close to d.t .....along fraternities, sororities... blue light special .... 4. Norton/Our suggestions are not a lot different... Parking ..... consider extending 60 minute meters on Iowa Avenue, so we are looking for 1 1/2 meters. Drop the parking ban on 2:00 to 6:00 AM .... So heavy drinkers aren't forced to drive home .... Get other means for getting d.t. in the first place so you don't have problem with you car .... Different opinion about status of University Safe Ride .... status .... unclear .... Maybe city and Cambus might get together and review that .... suggest a late night bus run... issues related to drinking problem .... Parking problem... different for every one at the table .... consider a possibility of a no tow on Thursday, Friday, Saturday night. Do the street cleaning on the other nights .... ramps did not seem to be a biggie at my table ..... Transit .....for many, 75 cents seemed expensive... Time it takes to use it on days ....Talked a little bit about a free fare zone close in... trolley or some kind of a system that goes around. Bikes... not practical in most months... need more racks d.t ....They would like bike lanes. 5. (Vanderhoef) John Jones/Speaking for our group. We really focused more on parking and on bicycles .... We talked about what happens when we make it more difficult to park .... parking ramps... or do we want to not make more spaces.'? ...alternative means... different approach to the problem .... talking about making more spaces available .... keeping esthetics .... finding alternative means... methods .... Bikes .... biking... We need a biking culture .... make it more difficult to park or make it more difficult to drive, then we could do things to change the culture of Iowa City to biking .... bike lanes... covered parking, secure places .... bike... storage .... bike racks .... 6. Nov/Our group concentrated in terms of solutions on better education, better publicity .... Transit group... We should have a web page .... schedules at each bus stop .... We talked about the fact that there are meters available for various times and nobody knows where the 10 hour meters are... get maps as part of registry by This represents only a reasonably accurate transcription of the Iowa City council meeting of February 18, 1997 WS021897 February 18, 1997 Council Work Session-UI Student Senate page 4 University students .... so you know where all those long term meters are .... Have map include all the color coding on the street meters ....30 minutes, 60 minutes... Also we are planning to approve lighting ramps .... Also had a comment... areas on campus are not well lit .... 7. Lehman/We talked about most of the same issues... I want to thank the folks at my table... delightful .... One of the things we talked about is this business of parking .... We need to encourage folks to ride more than one person per car .... I don't know how we do that .... One of our concerns is we need to encourage folks to put more people in cars. We also discussed commuter parking .... The other thing we mentioned... relationship City of Iowa City has with the University of Iowa .... It has improved over last 15-20 years .... I am very very proud of that. I don't think the University is building their share of parking and we did discuss that for just a little bit. The other thing... I think we have to talk about the future ofd.t ....kinds of things we need to do d.t... We had the same opinion when it came to buses. That there should be more information .... subject that has been talked about council.. If them is anyway in the world to combine Cambus and the Iowa City bus system, Coralville bus system... real economies of scale... better service. We need bike racks ..... I ride across the Pentecrest... then the CBD, I had no idea that I can't ride my bike them. The signage that we have, according to him, is not the best... I think we can do a better job in signage. Mark Beltrame/...I would emphasize that we mustn't let the progress and ideas that were fostered through the discussions her tonight be left here tonight... requires a lot of energy... on parts of student government .... while my term of office is ending... I feel good that I am leaving a student government that has been committed to student issues such as this... We have a city council who is dedicated to working with us... building a coalition. Kevin LaMontagne/Graduate student at College of Business and to take this process one step further... working with a group of students... research project with the Iowa City Transit Department .... measuring customer satisfaction... future changes... Focus group which we have scheduled for this Thursday, 7:00 PM, Pappajohn .... anyone here tonight... interested in coming .... Ron has been kind enough... anyone This represents only a reasonably accurate transcription of the Iowa City council meeting of February 18, 1997 WS021897 February 18, 1997 Council Work Session-UI Student Senate page 5 who participates in that a monthly bus pass which is very generous ....
