HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-09-09 Proclamation City Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the number of frail and elderly Americans is dramatically increasing; and WHEREAS, all citizens are impacted by the past and present contributions of America's frail and elderly people; and WHEREAS, we salute our community's citizens now residing in assisted living facilities, many of whom planted the seeds that made our community grow and prosper; and WHEREAS, assisted living facilities provide caring and supportive services that make quality of life possible for our loved ones; and WHEREAS, assisted living facilities in Iowa City are providing a host of activities in observance of National Assisted Living Week. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 7-13, 2003, as Assisted Living Week in Iowa City and encourage all citizens to visit friends and loved ones who reside at assisted living facilities and to help honor and serve the individuals who laid the foundations of Iowa City by participating in this year's National Assisted Living Week. '\,, Mayc~r Signg~fin Iowa City, Iowa, ~.~th day of September, 2003. x City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, our founding fathers, in order to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity, did ordain and establish a Constitution for the United States of America, and Whereas, it is of the greatest importance that all citizens fully understand the provisions and principles contained in the Constitution in order to effectively support, preserve and defend it against all enemies; and Whereas, the two hundred fifteenth anniversary of the signing of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to remember the achievements of the Framers of the Constitution, and the rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded to us in this unique document; and Whereas, the independence guaranteed to American citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, should be remembered, Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the week of September 17-25, 2003, to be Constitution Week in Iowa City and urge all citizens to reflect during that week on the many benefits of our Federal Constitution a.nd the privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, The American Heart Association has provided invaluable service to fighting heart disease and stroke; and Whereas, The American Heart Association has given The University of Iowa 2.4 million dollars in 2002 for research in the fight against heart disease and stoke; and Whereas, cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and woman since 1919; and Whereas, approximately 40,000 babies are bom each year with a heart defect; and Whereas, cardiovascular disease kills nearly 959,000 Americans each year - more then cancer, accidents and AIDS combined; and Whereas, the American Heart Association is dedicated to the reduction of disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 28 to be American Heart Association Day in Iowa City and encourage residents to participate in the Annual American Heart Walk in Lower City Park on Sunday, September 28.
