HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-10-14 Proclamation 21t City oflowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, eighty-two years ago a group of civic-minded business leaders established an international service organization in Macon, Georgia; and Wherell$, the founding members combined their diverse talents in "friendship and service" to improve the quality of life in communities throughout the world; and Wherelts, the service focus of Pilot International is helping people affected by brain-related disorders; and Whereas, Pilot International Foundation furthers the organization's humanitarian efforts through grants and scholarships to support research, education, and care-giving programs; and Whereas, Pilot International fosters volunteer/sm in more than 10,000 young people worldwide through Anchor Clubs; and Whereas, The Pilot Club in Iowa City is dedicated to m6eting the needs of the community through volunteerism. Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim October 18, 2003 to be: Pilot International Day in Iowa City. It is fitting that the achievements and contributions of this worthwhile organization, its clubs and members be recognized on this their eighty- second anniversary. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas home should be a place of warmth, unconditional love, tranquility and security and, for most of us, home and family can indeed be counted among our greatest blessings. Tragically, for many Americans, these are blessings that are tarnished by violence and fear; and Whereas, domestic violence is more than the occasional family dispute. The Johnson County Domestic Violence Intervention Program received 3,734 requests for services last year and 24,577 Crisis Line calls and, according to the National Crime Victimization Survey report Intimate Partner Violence, 876,340, women were victimized by domestic violence in 1998; and Whereas, despite significant progress in providing rights and services to crime victims over the past two decades, large segments of our population -- including crime victims who are elderly, young, disabled or living in rural areas, are still underserved; and Whereas, a coalition of organizations has emerged to directly confront this crisis. Law enforcement officials, those involved with shelters and hofline services, health care providers, clergy, and other concerned citizens are helping in the effort to end domestic violence. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City do hereby proclaim the month of October 2003 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Iowa City and urge our citizens to become aware of the tragedy of domestic violence and support victims and those wh(~ are working toward its end; and Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, 14th day of October, 2003. 2b City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Where~ should be a place of warmth, tranquility and and, for most of us, home and family be counted among our blessings. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the United Nations was founded $8 years ago to improve our global community by strengthening the ties among member nations through improved communications, expanded understanding, and enhanced security. It has since grown to include 191 Member States; and Whereas, the people of the City of Iowa City have a long and rich history of international friendships, culture, concerns, and commitments; and Whereas, in February 2003, the United Nations launched the International Literacy Decade, an initiative that seeks to increase global literacy levels by $0% by the year 2015; and Whereas, Mary Helen Lanaghan, Literacy Coordinator for the Iowa City Learning Center of Kirkwood Community College has been named United Nations Day Chair 2003 for Iowa City and Johnson County by the Johnson County Chapter of the United Nations Association (UNA) of the United States. Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim October 24 as United Nations Day and ask our citizens to join the world in commemorating the founding of this important international organization and recognizing the profound impact it has had on our world as well as the role it continues to play. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, more than 840,000 people in the United States were reported missing in 2001; and Whereas, the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates that between 85 percent and 90 percent of those people were juveniles; and Whereas, KinderVision® Foundation is a national child safety education program dedicated to the protection of children from those who would harm them; and Whereas, KinderVision has benefited more than 10 million people with its safety messages since its founding in 1991; and Whereas, the KinderVision safety video is designed to be an ongoing resource for families to use in their homes to teach children how to be safe when not with their parents; and Whereas, parents are the first line of defense and a child's greatest teacher; and Whereas, provides child safety information on using a public restroom, answering the door, staying in groups, being approached by someone, and more. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City do hereby proclaim October 25 to be Child Protection Day in Iowa City. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, somewhere in the United States, a home fire occurs about every 85 seconds resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths, 50,000 injuries and $5 billion damage to homes; and Whereas, about 94 percent of American homes have smoke detectors; however, 20 percent do not work because of worn or missing batteries; and Whereas, smoke alarm maintenance is one of the simplest, most effective ways to help reduce home fire deaths and injuries, effectively cutting the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half by providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape; and Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke detectors, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and Whereas, October 26, 2003, is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the day of October 26, 2003, to be "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" Day in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries and to install new smoke alarms if they are ten years old or older.
