I City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, tonight we are proud to honor our veterans, and especially those who have been recently deployed; and W.he.reas, 227 years ago, the signers of the Declaration of Independence aec~ared that "all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among those are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness"; and Whereas, throughout the course of American history, courageous men and women have taken up arms to secure, defend, and maintain these core principles upon which our Nation's freedoms depend; and Whereas, our troops are now fighting overseas to defeat terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations abroad. They follow in the footsteps of the 48 million men and women who, since our Nation's founding, have stepped forward to defend our land; and Whereas, let us honor our veterans who consistently defend our ideals across the globe, who have proven their heroism and love of country time and time again, as more than a million veterans have died in service to America and more than a million and a half have been wounded. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2003 to be Deployed Veterans Remembrance Day in Iowa City.
