Wombacher EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITON: For the past 8 years, since retiring from the University of Iowa, I have been an active participant in several programs at the Senior Cemer. I have worked with a signfficant number of Senior Cemer participants as well as staffin coordinating several very successful events. Prior to this, I served as departmemal administrator at the Univ. of Iowa for 20 years, where I coordinated the assignment of space, directed the hirio~ and assignmem of personnel and managed a budget of around $18,000,000 to $20,000,000 per year from a variety of funding sources. I was involved in establishing and administering policies and procedures within the relevant guidelines of the University of Iowa and other pertinent emitias. I enjoy people, and believe that I can contribute in a positive manner to the Senior Center by serving on the Commission. WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD: It is my understanding that the Senior Center Commission functions in an advisory role. I believe the Commission also serves as a representative body for the Center participants, seeking input and serving as a conduit to the staffand/or City Council. And, ! hope to learn more about the specific Commission responsibi]kies in the months to come. I understand that the Commission meets monthly. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD (OR STATE m:ASO~ FO~ APPLVmO): In addition to the experience and activities described above, I feel that I have enjoyed the offerings of the Center for the past 8 years; and it'possible, I would now like to raake a commitment in time and effort to "give back" to the Center. ~ ~ It should be noted that my spouse and I usually spend January in a warmer clin~e, and~ therefore I would not be available for a meeting in January each year. I am a member of the Senior Center. c~ I I~ev~t~ the Senior Center should be: ~ ~ ~ a primary focal point for services and life-enriching experiences for ~-~ ~ the seniors oflowa City and Johnson County; ~ ~ ~* a hub of activities, recognizing that other community facilities can and · ~ should be utilized; ~' ~ * and last but not least m. A warm and friendly facility in which the ~ ~ seniors have a sense of belonging and the staff is dedicated to their service. I will work with staff, members of the commission, members of the Senior Center, seniors and the community at-large to generate varied and exciting programs. I believe that many agencies and community and university groups would be willing to provide programs and activities free of charge to participants. I believe that the Senior Center should be a place for seniors of aH age brackets, income and social levels and educational background. EXPERIENCE: I have been active in senior programs and am a strong advocate for seniors. I lead the effort for the city to purchase the Old Post Office and to sale some of the land for the erection of Ecumenical Towers. I served as chair of the Ecumenical Housing Corporation and represented that corporation on the committee that made the original plans for the Senior Center. I chaired the Johnson County Nutrition Committee for many years. I am currently chair of the Program, Planning and Budget Committee of the Heritage Area Agency on Aging and chair of the Johnson County Task Force on Aging. (My terms as chair of these two groups end on June 30, 2004.) KNOWLEDE: I have attended several meetings of the Commission. CONTRIBUTION: I believe my knowledge of the community, my familiarity with the concerns and needs of seniors, and my roles in the aging network provide me with the background to assist the Commission in fulfilling its mission. I also believe that I have the skills to reach out and listen to persons and include them. I believe ! am a strong advocate for seniors. In the past ! served as the first chair of what is now called the Housing and Community DeveLopment Commission and as the first chair of what is now called the Telecommunications Commission. After many years of not serving on a City Board or Commission ][ am now ready to serve again. It would be an honor to serve Iowa City as a member of the Senior Center Commission. Washington Street Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Dear Ernie: I am writing to thank you for the honor of my appointment to the Airport Commission, however, at this time I am submitting my resignation. It has been a joy working with the Airport Manger, our FBO Jet Air, other Commissioners, the City Council, and City staff, however, personal commitments are too demanding for me to continue in this role. I think ABS has made some excellent recommendations to improve the operations and growth of the Iowa City Airport. I also believe, fi.om my observations over the past year and a half, that these recommendations can be best achieved by placing the management of the airport under the City Manager. Finally, I think the City Council should seriously consider changing the airports' status as an Enterprise Fund. I think the Airport is a transportation facility, just as the City buses are, and given the fact that the Airport does not have Air Carder Service, I don't think it will ever make revenues for the City. I sincerely hope I am wrong on this last point. Again, it has been an honor! Most Sincerely, Michelle Robnett 3375 Wentworth Place Iowa City, IA 52240 IW; f Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor Iowa City Council Dear Mayor Lehman, With this letter, I give the Council notice that I will leave the Planning and Zoning Commission for Iowa City on December 31, 2003.
