HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-03-10 Proclamation~l~I~, ~e Grant Wood Area Chapter of the An~.erica~nf Red Cross pr~ovides vital services to~.east~ern Iowans rega~rdless o their race, education, income or political persuasion; and ~)t~ta~,.the) Ch~ ap~ter, pro~d? local disas~te~r vict~im, s~with~vouch~ers, to pay ~or ~ood, clo~thing,~odging, critic~a! househo~i goocts, and other emergency articles anct services; and ~[[Itrt~l~, the American Red Cross is a communication link between service members and their loved ones by relaying news of births, deaths, and serious illness; and ~t§t~t~, Eastern Iowans learn vital lifesaving skills, including CPR and first aid, under the guidance of dedicated Red Cross instructors; and ~htrt.~, every year thou~sands of area youth complete_ water_ safety classes taught by Red Cross trained instructors employed by City pool and recreation centers; and ~§t~t~I~, many of our community's youth have learned the facts about AIDS, including prevention measures, through the dedicated efforts of Red ~rross HIV/AIDS educators. ~tCttUCt, I, Ernest W. Le .1Lman, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of March 1998, as [meri an Cross in Iowa City, and I urge our citizens to support the American Red Cross. Where. as, mental retardation is a condition which approximately 2,000 Iowa City children families; and today affects and adults along with their Whereas, the most effective weapons for alleviation of the serious problems associated with mental retardation are public knowledge and un~derstanding; and Whereas, the potential for citizens with mental retardation to function more independently and productively must be fostered; and Whereas, during the month of March, 140,000 members through 1,100 state a~td local chapters of the Arc, a national organization on mental retardation, are forging vital employment, educational, and fund-raising campaigns under private sector initiatives; and Whereas, the Arc of Johnson County will celebrate 41 years of service to families and individuals. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W.
