PROCLAMATION
Whereas, on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers accomplished the first powered
flight of a "heavier than air" aircraft and opened the door to some of the greatest
adventures and accomplishments ever witnessed by humankind; and
Whereas, Iowa City has been a part of the Nation's aviation system since' 1918; and
Whereas, aviation is now an essential part of Americans' everyday lives, and
strengthening our air transportation system is necessary to maintain the economic
and social benefits we are accustom to; and
Whereas, Iowa is the home of many prominent businesses that rely on aviation for
their success; and
Whereas, Iowa is where the Wright Brothers spent their formative years and was the
home of many world renowned members of the aviation community, including
Ellen Church, Amelia Earhart and Clyde Vernon Cessna; and
Whereas, the future of aviation is dependent upon a well-informed and educated
populace and the celebration of powered flight is also a celebration of ingenuity
and creativity.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, in celebration of
the centennial of flight, do hereby proclaim December 17, 2003, as
