April 2002 (1) EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION: In my former position of Marketing Director for Celebrity Cruises, I was a member of the steering committee, responsible for planning and design of the nine vessel fleet. Each ship represents a major capital investment (over 450M) that is expected to have a life of 20+ years. Building a cruise ship is like building a floating city; requiring a massive infrastructure to provide water, sewage, safety, and security as well as passenger flow/access to support a community. Coast Guard, marine, health and environmental standards are very stringent and it is a challenge to both meet and exceed these standards when building a new ship. As a member of this team, I not only had the opportunity to contribute new product ideas but also work with the architects and designers to deliver these concepts. I have a historical perspective of Iowa City having been in the community when urban renewal was introduced and observing the city grow over the last 30 years (my family has resided in Iowa City since 1945) I have also been fortunate to have lived in two planned communities, Shaker Heights, Ohio (notable for its mass transit system and ring of parks) and Weston, Florida (an example of new urbanism) as well as the urban communities of Soho and Forest Hills in New York City. Since moving to Iowa City, I have become an active steering committee member of the Northside Neighborhood Association, a member of the regional government committee of the League of Women Voters and a member of the Chamber Leadership Program for 2003/04. But more importantly, it is my role as a husband and father, combined with the deliberate choice to stay and raise our family in Iowa City that I feel best qualifies me for this position. INHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? My present knowledge of the Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission has been limited to televised meetings on public access TV. However, as a law student at the University of Iowa, I have had, and continue to gain, exposure to various aspects of planning and zoning in my studies of Properly, Real Estate, Constitutional, and Administrative law. Additionally, as a new homeowner in the Peninsula Neighborhood, I have had first hand experience with the product of the planning and zoning activities of this commission. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD? As a conscientious citizen of Iowa City, I have a great desire to see our community grow in a vibrant and sustainable manner, such that Iowa City increasingly becomes a place where people purposefully choose to live. I feel that my background and training will equip me well to focus on the details of planning and development, yet at the same time allow me to contemplate the broader reaching ramification these activities have on the entire community. In serving on this commission, I wish bdng the perspective of an individual whose interests lie with my fellow citizen in creating a great place to live, and as such, I would seek to build consensus among diverse parties in order to achieve balance between progress and preservation. I am very interested in working with the commission to offer recommendations to council concerning enforcement, modification, and amendments to the comprehensive plan. I believe I can work cooperatively with members of the commission as I have in re-invigorating the Creekside Neighborhood Association and participating on the Neighborhood Council. While I am no expert in city codes and ordinances, I am a good researcher, as that is what I do for a living with ACT, Inc. I would be glad to answer any questions you may have for me. Feel free to contact Marcia Klingaman who I have worked with in conjunction with the Neighborhood Association, if you would like a different perspective about my capabilities.
