affected by hunger or the risk of hunger; and
~1~!~1~1~I~, hunger is a frequent occurrence among many low income
families and endangers one of our most valuable resources, our
children; and
i~lhereas, hunger~ has ~ar reach~ .g c.on. sequences, redu~ces a child's abiht~
to learn and inhil~its good health, decreases prodn~ctive energy. and
increases the cost or'health care, and prevents this nation from
reaching its full potential; and,
i~l~l~l~l~Ig, because of changes in funding for programs helping to
provide food and nutrition, a greater responsibility is plac~ed on the~
private sector food service programs such as soup kitchens and
~ood banks which help meet emergency food needs; and
lhereag, there is a need to create public awareness of this problem and
to generate support for those ~vho have accepted the responsibility
of caring for t]~ose in need.

retardation and their families in 1957 wi~ a sm~ll membership of
parents, and
ffiOerea , today, the over 3000Johnson County Citizens with mental
retardation and developmental disabilities contribute to Iowa City and
Johnson County by h-ring, working, learning and recreating in our
communities, and
il l erea , the Arc of Johnson County and the members have worked
progr~essively with United Way, Goodwill Industries of Southeast Iowa,
Handicare, Systems Unlimited and other organizations addressing needs
and expanding services to persons with disabilities in our commnnity,
and
i erea , the Arc of Johnson County serves our communi~ through: respite
care for parents of children with disabilities, employment services
providing economic independence to persons with disabilities, advocacy
for persons with disabilities and their~amilles and prevention education
to eixhance the likelihood of healthy babies, and
i Oereag, the Arc of Johnson County will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary
of shaping vitalemployment, educational, and fiindraising initiatives.
