a civilian is injured in a fire roughly every 20 minutes; and
~l~r£aff, only about one-fo-urth of all fire victims die from burns or heat; the rest
die from inhaling smoke and poisonous gases or from lack of oxygen; and
~I~£171~I~, in addition to deaths and injuries, home fires in the U.S. cause annual
property loss of nearly $5 billion; and
~£r£~1~, in recent years, the three most frequent causes of fire in U.S. homes have
been: 1) cooking equipment, 2) heating equipment, and 3) arson or suspected
arson; and'
'~T~£~l~, the fire service of the Iowa City Fire Department is dedicated to the safety
of life and property from the devastating effects of fire; and
erea , those members of the fire service are joined by other concerned citizens
of this city, as well as businesses, schools, service clubs, and organizations in
their fire safety efforts; and
IOerea , the people of Iowa City are urged to participate in fire prevention
activities at home, work, and school, to heed the message: "Know When to
Go! React Fast to Fire!" as the 1997 Fire Prevention Week theme suggests.

Iowa's families; and

system to encourage cost-effective care by coordination of health
care services; and

Physicians, in affiliation with the 85,000 members of the
American Academy of Family Physicians, are promoting October
as Family Health Month to emphasize the importance of good
health for all Iowa families; and
~t~rt~, this is the 50th Anniversary of the American Academy of
Family Physicians which has designated October 20-26, 1997 as
Family Physician Care for America Week, celebrated by the Iowa
Chapter with a special family violence project, carried out by
individual family physicians, to increase public awareness about
this serious problem~
