PROCLAMATION
Whereas, diseases of the heart are the nation's leading cause o£death and stroke is
the third leading cause of death; and
Whereas, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death among
women; and
Whereas, heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of
more than hal£a million women each year -- more than the next seven causes of death
combined, and nearly twice as many as all forms o£cancer including breast cancer; and
Whereas, the cost o£cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the US is estimated at
$352 billion; and
Whereas, one in five females in the United States have some form o£cardiovascular
disease; and
Whereas, 03 percent of women who died suddenly of coronary heart disease had no
previous symptoms of this disease; and
Whereas, February is designated as American Heart Month; and
Whereas, the American Heart Association is launching a new campaign, Go Red
For Women, to encourage women to pay attention to their hearts and help them live
longer, stronger lives by reducing their risk £or cardiovascular disease.
Now, therefore, ~, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City o£Iowa City, in
recognition of the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke, do
hereby proclaim February 6, 2004, to be

in Iowa City and urge all citizens to wear red in recognition of family, friends and
neighbors who have suffered from heart disease, and as a show of support to fight it. By
increasing awareness of the risk factors for this devastating disease and taking actions to
reduce them, we can save thousands of lives each year.

assured the independence of all her people, and
Whereas, more than a million veterans enter the Department of Veterans
Affairs Medical Centers nationwide for medical attention annually, and
Whereas, these hospitalized veterans who yet bear the physical and emo-
tional scars of war have most surely earned our gratitude for the many
personal sacrifices they have made on our behalf, and
Whereas, the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, for the 29th
consecutive year, has organized a national day of tribute honoring all
hospitalized veterans with the purpose of urging Americans to
remember these men and women, especially on this day, and

which is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week
Program dedicated to the re-emphasis of the values and
responsibilities of people in a free society, and
Whereas, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies
of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence throughout
its entire membership of Clubs, and
Whereas, the Old Capitol Sertoma Club of Iowa City and Coralville
supports Freedom Week through its National Heritage Essay
Contest, an essay contest for Eighth Grade students in Johnson
County designed to emphasize and educate students on
responsibilities of citizens in a democracy, and
Whereas, it seems proper and fitting to accord official recognition to
Sertoma's Freedom Week.
