Iowa City Council, First I would like to thank you for addressing the issue of a public skateboarding area in Iowa City. My suggestion is to move the skateboarding area to the parking lot under the College Street Bridge by the Iowa City Rec. Center. This would be a more suitable location for the following reasons. 1. The ramps and obstacles would last longer in a covered area. The material used on the surfaces of the ramps (masonite) is easily weathered by rain & snow. 2. The location would be at least one block from any residential building. 3. Moving the ramps every day causes damage to the edge of the riding surface that meets the ground. This causes a raised edge, or kink, which can catch on skateboard wheels. The area toward the west end of the bridge could be set aside for ramps and obstacles, making it not necessary to move the ramps twice a day. 4. The lighting is better. 5. The new location would be away from sidewalks and excessive pedestrian traffic. 6. We could skate even when it's raining. I have been building and maintaining the ramps at the current location and would continue to maintain the ramps in the new location. Please contact me if any of you have questions about skateboarding, skate parks or the new location. Sincerely, Isaac Burns 318 N. We feel that we have received a very fair' and thor'ough hearing from both your planning and zoning commission arid the City Coun- cil. We appreciate your recommendations and they will be addressed. We would like to go a step further by offering to meet with your Park and Recreation Department and the County Conserva- t:i. on Commission to seek their input and suggest:~or~s regard:i. ng their desires for future park uses such as 'trails on t[~e pro: perty. Once the sand has been mined and the land reclaimed it will be a gorgeous park-like wildlife preserve and we feel it would be a shame nc)t to plan for it's best use in the years to come. Of course, Mr,, Williams .) the land owner, would have to be included in these discussions. We look forwarcl to hear- ing from you about this matter,. Rober't G. Unless directed otherwise by the City Council, this action will occur on or shortly after October 22, 1997. Action Pursuant to Section 9-1-3A(10) of the City Code, signage will be installed indicating No Parking Corner to Here on the east side of Johnson Street from the intersection with Jefferson Street north 60'. Comment This action is being taken to accommodate the new Downtown Transit Shuttle turning this corner. Currently, with cars parked legally 15' from the corner without blocking the sidewalk, the bus cannot adequately turn from the left lane on Jefferson Street onto Johnson. By pulling cars back from the corner, the bus has sufficient room. If in the future a different vehicle is used for the transit shuttle route, this action will be re-evaluated based on the new vehicle turning requirements.
