PROCLAMATION
Whereas, International Women's Day is observed throughout the world as a day when
women on all continents come together to focus on women's human rights; and
Whereas, International Women's Day is rooted in the struggle of women to participate in
society on an equal footing with men; and
Whereas, International Women's Day has assumed a global dimension for women in
developed and developing countries; and
Whereas, organizers in Iowa City have determined a day is not sufficient to adequately
celebrate and discuss the accomplishments of women locally and globally; and
Whereas, more than one-half of the world's population is female, women perform two-
thirds of the world's work, and women represent over three-fifths of the world's literate
population; and
Whereas, Iowa women and women around the world share similar concerns; and
Whereas, this is a time to reflect on women's progress, call for change where needed, and
to celebrate women's acts of courage and determination in the fight for human rights.
Now, therefore, ~, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim the month of March 2004 to be
International Women's Month
in Iowa City, and I urge our citizens to join me in celebrating International Women's Month.
