General Application (2) February 2004 Marian Karr From: John L. Krstenansky [john-krstenansky@uJowa.edu] Sent: Thursday, February 19, 2004 1:31 PM To: cou ncil@iowa-city.org Subject: Suggested contact. Dear Council Members, I have just submitted an application for Airport Cemm~ission appointment. Per application instructions it is suggested that I contact you te allow to better assess who I am and whether I am appropriate for such an appointment. I will start with this email as an initial introduction, then I invite these of you who are interested in more information to contact me either by email or phone at the number and timetable provided below. I just returned te Iowa City six months age te take a lectureship at the University of Iowa after a move te the East Coast from having lived in this area. From 1997-2001, I lived in Coralville and worked at a company out at Oakdale at the VP level. During that time was when I met and married my wife, a lifelong Iowa City resident. Previous to that I have lived in several places from coast to coast due to my employment in the pharmaceutical/bietech industry for the past 18 years. Hy employment background is that I am a PhD medicinal chemist who has worked at the scienuific, managerial, operational and executive level at both large and entrepreneurial companies. I also have a HBA. Upon my return te this area I have been reestablishing my contacts within the business community via prior contacts and through available venues {e.g., Venture Network Forum). So despite the relatively short time I have lived here, I feel that I am aware of many ef the economic and non-economic (e.g. historic preservation) issues and concerns of this community. Hy interest in this particular commission stems from three factors: 1} I have been a private pilot since 1983 and have an active interest in keeping the airport active and viable and in improving both the safety and utility of the facility (e.g., instrument approach). 2) I am a nearby neighbor and live in the pattern of one of the runways, so while being a pilot, can certainly understand community sensitivity regarding sound level, safety, development restriction and obstruction clearance issues. 3} AS a businessman, I understand the importance of sound governance and prudent fiscal oversight. I understand the importance of this great resource te Iowa City and would like to help net only the airport te grow into a better aviation facility, but also find ways for the facility te develop in ways that promote other development needs ef Iowa City. This latter is eno where I would have to state that I de net have any specific ideas along these lines at this time and I would need some more time to assimilate the current state of the airport development and the development geals of the city as a whele. I'm sure that there are many mere detailed questions that yeu might have so I will give you my availability to speak by phone: Hen & Wed 9-11:30AH Tue & Thur 1-2:30PH Fri most of the day E-mail ef course also werks well and I can reply individually or via reply all, whichever you prefer. Regards, Dr. Jehn L. General Application (2) February 2004 Marian Karr From: Maharry, Michael [michaer-maharry~uiowa.edu] Sent: Friday, February 27, 2004 11:38 AM To: 'council@iowa-city.org' Subject: historic preservation again Sorry to waste your email time, I have learned that there is indeed another applicant who has a "positive interest in preservation" (as required by the state to have CLG status) for the at large open position. You have no doubt seen Justine Zimmer~s name associated with the Englert project. She also has grant writing experience. Either Justine or the current member, Richard Carlson would be a wonderful fit on the commission. Again, sorry for the confusion. Michael Maharry 358.1024 mmaharry@yahoo.com Marian Karr From: Maharry, Michael [michael-maharry@uiowa.edu] Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2004 5:41 PM To: 'cou ncil@iowa-city.org' Subject: historic preservation commission Greetings, It seems there is only one new applicant for the at-large position on the HPC. This applicant, Mike Brennan, is concerning to me for the following reasons: 1) The commission is required to seek me~bers who have a positive interest in historic preservation. Hr. Brennan spoke out against the creation of the preservation district less than 10 months ago. At last year~s council meeting (during Historic Preservation Week) he argued about how this preservation district was a bad idea. 2) Hr. Brennan has no preservation experience. He cites is legal skills as being potentially helpful, but we receive excellent council from city staff as it is. In contrast, the current position holder Richard Carlson is our chief grant writer, securing yearly funding which gives life to our activities. He serves as vice-chair of the commission, leading the meetings when the chair is indisposed. He has researched neighborhoods on his own time to help the commission and currently is preparing the National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Montgomery-Butler house which sits near the new water plant. He has been one of the few very active members of the commission during his term and I without reservation recommend the renewal of his term on the commission. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. She has shown, through her involvement with the Englert Theatre, that she is sensitiv~ to the preservation of Iowa City's heritage and that she knews hew te guide the process to achieve such preservatien. She has great grant writing skills and has a bread range of centacts, not only with relevant federal agencies but also with ether foundatiens - and with many, many of Iowa City's citizens, by whom she is very well respected.
