HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-04-20 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the coming of Spring produces a renewal of interest in tree planting for beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes beneficial to all people, and Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the planting and preservation of trees, and Whereas, we hope that the future will see the creation of a better environment through the use of trees throughout our cities, towns and countryside. Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property values, and enhance the economic vitality of business areas, Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim Friday, April 30, 2004, to be Arbor Day in Iowa City, and I hereby urge all citizens to in tree and preservation projects throughout the year. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Juvenile arson is a serious crime that affects all people and can only be stopped when citizens realize the physical and emotional damage suffered by arson victims; and Whereas, Juvenile arson and youth set fires result in more than 40,000 incidents annually, causing over 300 deaths and 2,000 injuries, as well as $300 million in property damage; and Whereas, the price that America pays for youth-set fires is extreme. Most of the lives lost are those of the very children setting the fires. In addition to the cost of the damaged property, there is the cost to the community of the increasing resources needed to fight the problem; and Whereas, the support of and promotion of National Arson Awareness Week will honor all that is best within humanity by focusing our collective efforts on a community solution: Now, therefore, I, Ernie Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, on behalf of its citizens do hereby proclaim May 2-8, 2004, to be Arson Awareness Week in Iowa City. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Herky on Parade will "Take the Hawkeye Spirit to the Street" and celebrate the 75th anniversary of the historic Kinnick Stadium, home of the University of Iowa's varsity football program; and Whereas, Herky on Parade has become a collaborative effort between the University of Iowa Athletic Department, Iowa City and Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Cities of Iowa City, Coralville and University Heights; and Whereas, 75 Herky sculptures sponsored by area businesses, organizations and schools, and other friends of our community will be placed throughout Iowa City, Coralville, University Heights, the campus of the University of Iowa, and the Eastern Iowa Airport; and Whereas, artists from all over Iowa, Colorado and Minnesota are participating in the project; and Whereas, the Herkys will hit the streets on Monday, May 3, at 9:00 A.M.; and Whereas, it is expected that this event will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Iowa City and Coralville area over the next six months; and Whereas, in November 2004, the Herky statues will be auctioned at public auction, and proceeds of the sale will support the renovation of historic Kinnick Stadium. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W Lehman, Mayor if the City of Iowa City Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2004 to be Herky on Parade Month in Iowa City and encourages all citizens to support and participate in the Herky on Parade event from May 3 through November 2004. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 20m day of April 2004. herky on parade Tak/n' the Hawkeye sp/r/t to the streets Herb/on Parade is a public art project that will take the Hawkeye spirit to the streets of greater Iowa City/Coralville during the spring, summer and fall of 2004 as the community - and the state of Iowa and fans of the Hawkeyes worldwide - celebrates the 75th anniversary of htstodc Kinnick Stadium on the University of Iowa campus. Seventy-five life-size statues of Herb/- the official mascot of the Iowa Hawkeyes - with designs ranging from "Cowboy Herb/" and "Big Foot Herb/" to "Tourist Herb/" and "Starry Night Herb/" will dot the landscape of Iowa City, Coralville and the University of l;owa campus beginning in early May and through November. The statues have been decorated by professional artists from as near as Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, and as far away as Minneapolis and Denver. The creativity will entertain young and old, fans of the Hawkeyes and fans of art and fun. A joint effort of the University of Iowa, the cities of Iowa City, Coralville and University Heights, and the Iowa City and Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau (ICCCVB), Herb/on Parade is the centerpiece of the University's celebration of Kinnick Stadium's 75th anniversary as the "Home of the Hawkeyes" and as a reminder of the cor0ing multi-million renovation of the histodc home of the University's varsity football program. Each of the 75 Herb/s has been sponsored by a local business that has the option of purchasing the artwork and taking ownership after completion of the Parade. Those statues that aren't purchased outright - or not slated for permanent display on the University of Iowa campus -- will be sold at auction December.
