HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-05-04 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in all 50 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists has designated the City of Iowa City as a "Bicycle-Friendly Community" for its ongoing commitment to improving local bicycling conditions and facilities; and WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as American Bicycle Month. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2004 to be Bicycle Month in Iowa City, and encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, and with friends and family to promote the benefits achieved from bicycling. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas,The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission are co-sponsoring Historic Preservation Week; and Whereas, historic preservation gives Americans a deeper understanding of their richly diverse architectural and cultural heritage; and - Whereas, historic preservation promotes local community pride in America's towns, cities and rural areas; and Whereas, Iowa City has many historically and architecturally significant neighborhoods, homes, commercial buildings, and public structures, which contribute to the quality of our life; and Whereas, it is important, to protect and preserve our city's historic resources for the use and enjoyment of current and future citizens; and Whereas, Historic Preservation Week provides an opportunity for all Iowa Citians to celebrate our community's historic treasures; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim May 3-9, 2004, to be Historic Preservation Week in Iowa City and call upon the people of Iowa City to recognize and participate in this special observance. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Congress and President of the United States have designated May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week; and Whereas, the members of the Iowa City Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding rights and freedoms; and Whereas, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of Iowa City Police, and that members of our Police Depamnent recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression; and Whereas, the men and women of the Iowa City Police Department unceasingly provide a vital public service. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, call upon citizens of the City of Iowa City to observe the week of May 9-15, 2004 as Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and observances. I further call upon all citizens of the City of Iowa City to observe May 15, 2004, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.
