General Application (2) February 2004 Experience and/or activities which you feel qualify you for this position: Executive Director, Emma Goldman Clinic Member and Treasurer of FAIR!, a local progressive coalition with a focus on local economic justice and democratic practice issues Co-Chair of Library Bond Referendum Committee, 2000 City Council Member Jan. 1989 to Jan. 2000 Member, Nuclear Free Zone Coalition, 1985 (initiative on ballot). These experiences have helped me learn about my community, the varied constituencies within my community, and how to separate out my interests from thc broader "greater good" of thc community. As someone who has been on initiative and referendum committees, as well as the City Council who has to implement the Charter, I feel I bring a multi-faceted perspective to the task of reviewing our Charter. What is your present knowledge of this advisory board? This commission is appointed once every ten years and is made up of at least nine members, appointed by the City Council. It's task is to review the City Charter and offer any amendments it deems appropriate via amendment through the council, and/or submitted to the voters of Iowa City. These recommendations arc binding upon the City Council. What contributions do you feel you can make to this advisory board? I have a great love and respect for local government and the people it serves. The strategies I tend to employ in local issues include active listening, doing my homework, being organized, and a great belief in inclusive public input. If appointed, I will approach this work from the standpoint that citizen involvement should be encouraged and made as simple and accessible as possible, while still meeting some kind of community benchmark. As an administrator and activist, I have an ability to zoom out to sec the bigger picture while being able to read the details to ensure they are consistent with the larger values towards which we strive. This combination of skills can help our community work through the seemingly dry document of the Charter, to the vital ways in which the ~-~ Charter guides our political responsibilities to our community. Have been actively involved in environmental groups. Married to Marit Hervig, lifelong Iowa City resident. Three year old daughter Oriana. Reside with father-in-law Richard Hervig, 86, resident of Iowa City, since 1940. Currently the manager of perhaps the worst softball team in Iowa City's Recreation League (if not the worst Rec League team alltime). What is your present knowledge of this Advisory Board? This board is entrusted with reviewing the city charter which is in essence the constitution for Iowa City, the document that reports how our city government runs. The board will be concerned with language defining the role of, and mode of operation of, city council and mayor, city manager, elections, city f'mances, housing, human rights, fire, police, and other related matters. What contributions do you feel you can make to this advisory board? Besides a love for the city and an interest in its politics, I believe I can offer understanding, vision, articulation, and teamwork. I'm a good writer and editor. I am very socially dynamic, able to both lead and cooperate, to negotiate and to compromise. Living in a multi-generational household, I have a good understanding of the issues regarding the needs of families, including seniors and children. I am especially interested in a city charter that allows for city government to be accessible to its citizens, to be clear in its language, and for a government that works for citizens' wellbeing. During the last city council election The Press Citizen wrote that I am intelligent, mature, and a bohemian. If the commission ~ ¢. can make room for someone like me, I will work hard to assure the city charter is worll~6ur citizens' pride, ri CITY OF IOWA CITY ADVISORY BOARD/COMMISSION APPLICATION FORM Individuals serving on Boards/Commissions play an important role in advising the Council on matters of interest to our community and its future.
