IZ l ereas, every year more than 6.000 workers are killed on the job in
this country, tens of thousands more are permanently disable~, and
millions are injured; and
lOereas, another 50,000 workers die from cancer, lung disease and
other disease related to toxic exposure at work; and
l ereag, renetitive strain iniuries and crippling back injuries affect
more tl~an 700,000 workers every year, o~ten with life-altering
crippling injuries; and
~e~.e~t~, concerned workers are determined to prevent these tragedies
by:
· Or~anizin~ Workers' Memorial Day, a day chosen bv the
unions of~the AFL-CIO and the Io'wa City Federatio'n of
Labor, AFL-CIO to remember those victims of work injuries
and disease; and
· Renewing efforts to seek stronger safety and health
protection, better standards and er~forcement and fair and
j~st. compensation; and
· l~edirecting resources to improve the safety and health in
every American workpJace on the anniversary of the
Occupational Safety and Health Act.

during the 1997-1998 season, and

Basketball Title, the second state title for basketball in the history of
West High; and

richly deserve the support and recognition of thi. community for

community since 1970 and will conduct Crisis Center Week
April 27-May 3, 1998, to observe the 28th annlverssxy of Service
to the community, and

ages and backgrounds through short-term counseling, suicide
preven_tion, 'mterve. ntion and post-vention, info,,ation and
referral, Food Bank, Project Holiday, transient transportation
assistance, and community education, and
~f~l~11~l:l~tlg, the Crisis Center provided more than 62,000 services during
1997 through the efforts of 150 dedicated volunteers from the
community, and

for, the efforts of the Crisis Center staff and volunteers,
